Specifically intended for lab-based biomedical researchers, this practical guide shows how to design experiments that are reproducible, with low bias, high precision, and widely applicable results. With specific examples from research using both cell cultures and model organisms, it explores key ideas in experimental design, assesses common designs, and shows how to plan a successful experiment. It demonstrates how to control biological and technical factors that can introduce bias or add noise, and covers rarely discussed topics such as graphical data exploration, choosing outcome variables, data quality control checks, and data pre-processing. It also shows how to use R for analysis, and is designed for those with no prior experience. An accompanying website (www.cambridge.org/9781107424883) includes all R code, data sets, and the labstats R package. This is an ideal guide for anyone conducting lab-based biological research, from students to principle investigators working in either academia or industry.

Review
'This is a wonderfully lucid introduction to experimental design, written by an author who is clearly aware of the pitfalls that exist for the unwary experimenter. The focus is on how to design experiments to ensure reproducible research, with many examples illustrating general principles that need to be understood to avoid error and bias. The coverage of statistical analysis follows on naturally from the design issues, and is amply illustrated with exercises in R. Highly recommended.' Dorothy Bishop, University of Oxford

'Worldwide there is a salient discussion about deficiencies in the validity and predictiveness of research in the life sciences. Indeed, a fullblown 'reproducibility crisis' has been proclaimed. Against this backdrop this important textbook is a timely and highly useful contribution in the pressing quest to improve the robustness, rigor, and reproducibility of current biological and preclinical research. Proper experimental design is the bedrock for obtaining reliable evidence. By providing the necessary conceptual know-how and practical knowledge, [this book] enables investigators in all stages of their careers to minimize bias and improve statistical power through proper design and analysis of their experiments. This volume is unique ... [as] it is immensely readable and accessible even for those with little previous knowledge, in combining all relevant aspects in a practical, concise and comprehensive manner, and in its clear focus on factors that help to improve the quality of research.' Ulrich Dirnagl, Charité University Hospital, Germany

'There is an increasing need to better design experiments not only to reduce the number of any animals being used in any such work, but also to ensure that the data so produced is meaningful. As part of that process knowing how to power studies and then properly analyse the data so generated is vital, and of late there have been concerns that this is not been done to same vigour as that seen in the clinical arena. However, most scientists struggle with this aspect of their work, and thus it is really refreshing to come across a book that explicitly deals with experimental design and analysis. This new book clearly lays out what can and should be done and is written by an acknowledged expert and I have no doubt that this book will become a recommended read for all those contemplating undertaking work of this type.' Roger Barker, University of Cambridge

A truly average textbook
By Karl
As textbooks go, it's fairly middle-of-the-road. Not terrible, but not impressive either. You can tell that this one is based on the same core format and been partially revised many times over the years. Despite that, it's not free of errors either; the sixth page of the first chapter has a critical (and hilarious) error that really hurts the credibility of the text right off the bat, but it's the only one of its kind that I can see. Because of the fact that it has been revised many times since its original publishing many years ago, some rather dated and odd-sounding verbage is left in for certain areas of the book that may confuse some folks, but it's not deal-breaking.

At the end of the day, it's an acceptable book with some decent content despite its shortcomings, even if it is ludicrously overpriced. If you need this for class, I recommend renting it, as that means spending the smallest amount of money on something that isn't of much value outside of the course for which it is required.

In this distinct selection of stories marked by struggle and compassion, Pieces Like Pottery is a powerful examination of the sorrows of life, the strength of character, the steadfast of courage, and the resiliency of love requisite to find redemption.

Filled with graceful insight into the human condition, each linked story presents a tale of loss and love mirroring themes from each of the five Sorrowful Mysteries. In Expect Dragons, James Hinri learns that his old high school teacher is dying. Wanting to tell Mr. Smith one last time how much his teaching impacted him, James drives across the country revisiting past encounters with his father's rejection and the pain of his youth. Disillusioned and losing hope, little did James know that Mr. Smith had one final lesson for him.

In The Gravesite, Lisa and Mike's marriage hangs in the balance after the disappearance of their only son while backpacking in Thailand. Mike thinks the authorities are right—that Chris fell to his death in a hiking accident—but Lisa has her doubts. Her son was too strong to die this young, and no one can explain to her why new posts continue to appear on her son's blog.

Twenty-Two looks in on the lives of a dock worker suffering from the guilt of a life not lived and a bartender making the best of each day, even though he can see clearly how his life should have been different. The two find their worlds collide when a past tragedy shockingly connects them.

A collection of nine stories, each exquisitely written and charged with merciful insight into the trials of life, Pieces Like Pottery reminds us of the sorrows we all encounter in life and the kindness we receive, oftentimes from the unlikeliest of places.

You will want this as a keepsake to read again and again and again.....
By Rajalakshmi Prithviraj
I wish I could give this collection 10 stars instead of 5. Its an awesome read from the start to finish.

I cannot specify which amongst the stories are my personal favourites because they all are. Each of the story in this collection has the power to pull the strings of your heart. The stories will make you grieve, cry, smile through your tears, empathize, introspect, in fact, they will make you feel every emotion that exists under the sun. The title for this collection is perfectly apt. The collection is like pottery and each story, each poetry, each quote, like its creation; they are independent but very much connected. The collection has an earthy flavour to it, whereby, every story is like some thing happening in reality. The stories are the real protagonists in this collection.

Dan is a wonderful storyteller. His narrative style and choice of words make the stories feel so real, its like seeing real life in print. The stories get you so involved that you can't stop until you finish reading. And yes, they will entice you to come back to them again, and again, and again. There are no exaggerations, no unnecessary additions, just plain yet emphatic story.

I say this without shame that by the time I finished reading the last page I was busy wiping away my tears with a towel (My handkerchief was nowhere to be seen!!!). This book is unputdownable.

To sum up, if you really wish to read stories which will make you 'feel', this collection is a must-read.

P.S- I am going to buy this book and add it to my collection of evergreen books!!!

By AEM
I was not emotionally prepared for what this book did to me. It is a collection of short stories about love and loss and the toll they take of the people involved. I was brought to tears several times and not because I could relate to what the characters were going through but I felt for their pain. I think however many people can more directly relate to what these characters go through as many have experienced that type of loss themselves.

The book kept me interested by keeping the stories compact. Writers can be temped to elongate a story for length sake but Dan kept things moving and I didn't lose interest. I did at times get a sense of "My life ain't so bad" when reading the tales of pain that these people had gone through. I really liked how Dan emphasized regularly the light at the end of the tunnel. Coming to terms with loss can be a burden that many people struggle with. Finding that light and getting there for these characters can uplift the reader to find their own light at the end of a loss.

All in all a great read that brought me to tears several times. If you are looking for a tear jerker with an uplifting message this is your book!

Amazing anthology
By Devi Nair
Pottery is a beautiful art – the art of molding clay into various shapes. The art is truly for the beholder as something which can seem random to someone can mean something incredible for someone else. Dan Buri’s “Pieces like Pottery” is very much like the art of Pottery, and therefore apt with the name. The stories are all molded like clay into some incredible pieces of stories which force the reader to ponder on their meanings and relate it to their lives in some or the other way.

The book is an anthology of 9 stories, each very different from the other. Each stories bring out different layers of human emotions in a slightly grey light but still shining bright. The Cancer Biopathy (The Discovery of Orgone, Vol. 2), by Wilhelm Reich

A Shrinking Disease Due to Chronic Sexual Starvation

What is Cancer? Traditionally, medical science has thought of it as an invasive tumor arising spontaneously in an otherwise healthy organism. In contrast, Wilhelm Reich defines cancer not as a tumor--the tumor is merely a late manifestation of the disease--but a systemic disease due to chronic thwaring of natural sexual functioning. In this radically different scientific investigation of a process that ends, literally, in the putrefaction of the living body due to chronic suffocatin of the tissues, Reich has arrived at the conclusion that "cancer is the most significant somatic expression of biophysiological effect of sexual stasis." If this is so, there is a far greater possibility for prevention of cancer than for its treatment.

The Cancer Biopathy is Volume II of The Discovery of the Orgone. Volume I is The Function of the Orgasm.

The Next Step After 'Selected Writings: An Introduction To Orgonomy'
By Kindle Customer
Some of the useful information in this book includes: the origins of the bion experiments, with photos; photodetection of orgone via contact photography, the cellulose orgone-scope and electronic sensors; cancer theory; bion water therapy; the orgone potential of fluids; and information on the effects of orgone therapy on developing children. Great to have on your shelf!

Very ground breaking!
By gregory
What fascinated me the most about this book(what I new was content in the book before I purchased it) is Reich's experiments leading up to his muscular armoring and cancer work. I followed up on some of Reich's experiments in earth(soil) bions that yielded some very interesting results. My binocular 2500X magnification compound light microscope with a micro camera gave some interesting videos that I find hard to explain by tradition means.

Deadlocked (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood, Book 12), by Charlaine Harris

It’s vampire politics as usual around the town of Bon Temps, but never before have they hit so close to Sookie’s heart…

Growing up with telepathic abilities, Sookie Stackhouse realized early on there were things she’d rather not know. And now that she’s an adult, she also realizes that some things she knows about, she’d rather not see—like Eric Northman feeding off another woman. A younger one.

There’s a thing or two she’d like to say about that, but she has to keep quiet—Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), is in town. It’s the worst possible time for a human body to show up in Eric’s front yard—especially the body of the woman whose blood he just drank.

Now, it’s up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl’s fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who’s set out to make Sookie’s world come crashing down.

Amazon.com Review

A conversation with Charlaine Harris, best-selling author of Deadlocked, and Laurell K. Hamilton, best-selling author of Kiss the Dead

Question: Did you ever imagine that your series would run as long as it has?

Charlaine Harris: I was just glad to sell the first book. It took two years of my agent sending it out to get a bite. I never even dreamed that Sookie would be so popular, that I would find so much to say about her and her world.

Laurell K. Hamilton: No. I had over two hundred rejections for the first Anita Blake novel. They were the nicest rejections, with editors suggesting other publishing houses to send it to, but they, themselves, couldn't figure out how to market it. When I got that first three book contract, I remember thinking, "Well, at least I'll get to write three of them." I actually did think I had at least ten books in Anita and her world, but I don't think anyone can plan to write twenty-one novels in a series and still be excited about starting the twenty-second.

Did you ever dream paranormal would be this hot?

LKH: I remember being told that mixed genre didn't sell, before the term paranormal became a genre. I was also told that no one wanted to read about vampires. More than one editor told me that particular monster was dead and gone. I thought there was life left in the old legends, but I never saw this level of popularity coming.

CH: Yes, even my agent didn't expect Dead Until Dark would be an easy sell, maybe especially since my books contained a lot of humor. Vampires were pass, and books that crossed genres (Except for yours: I think you had three or four books out when I wrote the first Sookie, and I was so glad to discover them!) were called "unshelvable.’ I could never have anticipated shelves and shelves of cross-genre books.

Does fan response play a part in your planning process?

CH: Not in the sense of changing plot direction in my novels. This is my story to tell, and I have to write it the way I see it. But every now and then when reader response to a character is unexpectedly enthusiastic--or the opposite--I'll take a second look at that character to see why he/she is coming across in a way I didn't expect or anticipate.

LKH: I don't change plot direction for fan reaction either. My story, my world, my books, my stuff, my way. The only people who can change the direction of my novels are my characters. It's their life, after all, so if they're really insistent on a different plot, then they win. I agree that reader response to a character can make me puzzle over them more, but it doesn't usually change how often the character is on stage, or how big their role is, because weirdly if the fans are interested, then I'm already intrigued. Best example is Edward who started out as this cold blooded assassin, almost a bad guy, and now he's one of Anita's best friends, and he's a U. S. Marshal. So, not what I had planned for him.

Have you ever had a character totally surprise you with their choices?

LKH: A lot of my characters have minds of their own. Edward went away on his own and got himself engaged to a woman with two children from her first marriage. Edward-- assassin, ex-military, current police officer, taking a six-year-old to ballet lessons with all the other moms both amuses and hurts my head. Anita's love life went into a completely different direction than I'd ever anticipated. I so didn't see Anita dating this many men, or being in love with more than one man, and having everyone she loved okay with that.

CH: I've discovered some surprising things about my characters as I wrote them. I know that their minds are really my mind, but sometimes it doesn't feel that way. It's like knowing a character has a secret (I'm thinking of Bill), and then suddenly realizing what that secret is. I was genuinely aghast. Sometimes my creative brain thinks a lot faster than my conscious brain. And it's certainly a lot more devious.

How do you keep a world with paranormal elements credible?

CH: I anchored my skewed world with real-life elements. Sookie has to pay her bills, she has to do her laundry, and she has family obligations. My vampires buy their clothes at the mall. My werewolf runs a surveying business. One of my fairies works in customer service at a department store. Readers seem to enjoy the fact that no matter what creature you may be, there's a process of surviving that has to be gone through; but there's all these other elements that make that process so different.

LKH: I make sure any real life facts are as real and well-researched as possible. Because I'm asking people to believe in vampires, wereanimals, and zombies, I need to make sure the guns, cars, and real crime are as realistic as possible. Once a reader catches me wrong in an area where they are expert they won't believe my monsters are real. But I have found if I'm right on the hard facts even experts will let me fudge, or take that next fantastic leap, because I've proven myself by laying the foundation of reality to make my leap into the unknown.

Do people ever expect you to be your characters?

LKH: If I had known people would get confused between fiction and fact I'd have made Anita look less like me, but it just never occurred to me that there would be a problem. I've had fans want to know what weapons I'm carrying. They assume all the men are based on real people, and they aren't. I don't actually base characters on real people. Since I can't lighten Anita's hair, I've lightened my own and I get less fan confusion. I've had fans ask for the phone numbers of the men and get angry when I tried to explain I couldn't give them the contact info for a fictional character.

CH: Ha! Well, I'm much older and rounder than Sookie, so I'm definitely no stand-in for Sookie. In fact, readers who have never met me before are usually astonished when they meet me; so were the actors on True Blood. Some of my readers who came to me after watching True Blood get the characters in the books sort of conflated with the actors who play them on television. In their minds, Alexander Skarsgard IS Eric, Stephen Moyer IS Bill. It can lead to some confusing questions when I'm at signings.

What scenes in your novels are the most fun for you to write? Action? Sex? Relationship drama?

CH: All of those are fun, depending on the outcome! But I have to say, I love to write a good fight scene. I find the "relationship" scenes a challenge. When people talk about their relationships, it's a messy conversation. People aren't too articulate about their innermost feelings. And such conversations don't proceed in a linear way, but jag back and forth as each speaker voices the issues that are most important to that person. So it's hard to make sound realistic, coherent, and yet condense such a conversation enough to make it tolerable.

LKH: It depends on my mood. Sometimes a good fight scene can be very therapeutic, and give a productive outlet for negative emotions. The more people involved in the action the more complex the fight choreography can become, and that can be a challenge, and slow down the emotional content for me. I enjoy doing sex scenes, but they are a different kind of challenge. On a day when I can get in the mood for the scene, they’re great, but on a day when real life interferes, it’s a bit like real sex. It’s hard to concentrate on it when you have too many interruptions from the non-sexy side of your life. I guess that’s true of all writing, though, too many interruptions disrupt the process in general. The biggest challenge for the sex scenes is that sex is a very personal and individual activity, so I have the same girl involved, but different men and I want each man’s style to be unique. Relationship drama? Yuck, can I just say, yuck again? This kind of drama isn’t fun in real life and the only thing that makes fictional relationship drama tolerable is that it’s fictional, and I’m not having to endure it in my real life, but other than that it sucks just as much. It also tends to complicate my life as a writer, because almost nothing screws up a story arc like relationship choices, though I have had action scenes go so differently from what I’d planned that an entire third of a book had to be thrown out. It was a better book for it, but still, near deadline that was hard.

What’s the hardest thing about writing such a long running series?

LKH: The beginning of the book is easy, because you always want that to be interesting and lure in both old and new readers. It’s the middle of the book that becomes more complicated. As a writer you always have to think that you may have brand new readers picking up your book, so you have to explain the characters, the world, everything, but you don’t want to over explain to the long time readers. The other problem with a series is that each book needs to stand alone as much as possible, but you also want character growth and world development from novel to novel, so again, it’s a balancing act. I make sure that each opening is different enough that you won’t be left wondering, did I read that already. It’s an issue I’ve had with other series that I read. It gets very challenging when you get in double digits to make everything fresh, but familiar. I’m lucky that I’m still discovering new things about Anita, Jean-Claude, Edward, Nathaniel, everyone, and the world continues to grow and surprise me. My fictional world is like the real one, I never know quite what’s coming next.

CH: The hardest thing is keeping track of previous developments and details. My memory just wasn't up to it, and I had to hire someone (the fabulous Victoria Koski). When you create a world, there are a thousand small things that make it credible, and it's easier than you'd think to forget whether someone is a werefox or a werelynx, or whether it's still daytime during the narrative or if you've passed into darkness. I think it's important to catch as many little errors as you can, so readers don't get yanked out of the world. I'm not the kind of reader who notices, but there are many readers who do.

The TWI Workbook: Essential Skills for Supervisors, Second Edition, by Patrick Graupp, Robert J. Wrona

Since the publication of its Shingo Prize-winning predecessor, TWI programs have seen steady growth in usage. As a true understanding of Standard Work has developed, the need for the TWI skills as fundamental tools to achieve Lean objectives has been solidified.

The TWI Workbook: Essential Skills for Supervisors, Second Edition has been completely updated to the latest terminology and practice. This edition includes revised forms and tools, as well as new examples that illustrate current day TWI practice. Emphasizing the importance of accident and injury prevention, this edition includes an entirely new section on Job Safety, a fourth TWI module that was developed in Japan using the identical TWI methodology of the original three programs introduced in the original work. This updated edition includes new chapters on:

  • Four Steps of Job Safety: Preventing Accidents before They Happen
  • Two Key Aspects to Safety: Things and People
  • Practicing the JS Method
  • TWI’s Problem Solving Training

In addition to a new chapter on the TWI problem-solving methodology, this edition contains a new introduction with a more complete description of how TWI was reintroduced into American industry, including detailed information on the contribution TWI made at Toyota that was not available when the original book was published.

Focusing on how the TWI skills create and support standardized work as the foundation for Lean and continuous improvement, the book includes detailed explanations on how to determine important steps and find key points that lead the way to standardized work. A new section on making a balanced breakdown has also been added, with new examples of Job Instruction breakdowns. The book also features a new conclusion that compares the historical role of TWI with what companies today are experiencing using the TWI methodology.

Review

"As you probably know, Robert Wrona has been the primary driving force behind spreading the Training Within Industry (TWI) concepts in North America and around the globe for the past couple of decades, in conjunction with the TWI Institute. In Patrick Graupp you have, without a doubt, the finest TWI master instructor in the English language around the world. The first edition of their workbook was of tremendous value, and the latest version is even better. ... Spend time carefully thinking about the first principles and fundamental elements in this material, like Taiichi Ohno and others inside of Toyota did more than 60 years ago. The fundamentals have provided value to American companies before and after World War II. The concepts have provided decades of value to Toyota and other companies around the world as well. Amazon.com Review
This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence People is just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person's point of view and "arousing in the other person an eager want." You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment. For instance, "let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers," and "talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person." Carnegie illustrates his points with anecdotes of historical figures, leaders of the business world, and everyday folks. --Joan Price

Review

From an era when 'self-help' books had genuine depth, Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" has influenced the world. No book in the self-help category matters more than this one.

Learning to relate to people in the ways Carnegie instructs will help you personally as well as professionally.

This book is a classic because Carnegie teaches timeless truths in timeless ways.

--Paul Walker

Lacking in structure, intellectual rigor, and content
By Adam Klimmek
Although I do not typically read these sort of works, in the case of Dale Carnegie’s book I felt compelled to do so because it comes so highly regarded. Having given it a close read over the last few days, I feel inclined to share my thoughts on it. In what follows, I will discuss the structure, rigor, and content of the book.

First, this book is very loosely structured. It is divided into four parts, each of which contains a handful of chapters. While it is easy to see why each chapter goes in which part of the book, there is no real logical connection from one chapter to the next. In fact, changing the order of certain chapters would arguably make for a better read overall. Take part two of the book, for example. Here, Carnegie lists his ‘Six Ways to Make People Like You’, where each principle gets its own chapter. There seems to have been no thought given as to how these six principles could be sensibly arranged—they’ve just been randomly mixed together. While I admit that what follows may not be the best possible alternative, it nevertheless seems to make sense to me. Perhaps the six principles ought to be rearranged based on the order in which they typically come to bear, or as follows: (1) smile; (2) remember (and use) the person’s name; (3) become genuinely interested in them; (4) be a good listener and ask questions; (5) keep the conversation centered on their interests; and, as a general culmination of everything, (6) make them feel important. Given the script that an encounter with someone new typically follows, that ordering would make the most sense. Rearranging the six principles in this way, then, could potentially help readers better remember and utilize them. To be sure, ‘Six Ways to Make People Like You’ is just the second part in a four-part book, but it illustrates the book’s general lack of structure all the same. In a word, I believe that the structure of the book is poor.

Second, this book lacks intellectual rigor. At heart, it is a work of psychology. However, the number of psych studies mentioned throughout the book can practically be counted on one hand. (And of those, how many were double-blind and peer-reviewed?) To support his claims, Carnegie relies primarily on cherry-picked anecdotes, random bits of history, and a grab-bag of quotes from authors, philosophers, presidents, and the like. Although the sheer breadth and quantity of his references may seem impressive at first blush, those who reflect in any detail on the nature of Carnegie’s ‘evidence’ will recognize that it provides weak support for his claims, at best. What’s more, most of his claims are completely unqualified. For example, he does not mention any instances in which smiling may actually cause people to dislike you. He does not address any scenarios where your ‘genuine interest’ in another person may come across as over-the-top and even frightening. He ignores the fact that beyond a point you can (and perhaps even should) stop calling your best friend by their name every time you address them. In short, Carnegie doesn’t provide much good evidence for his claims, the ‘evidence’ he does provide would reduce psychologists to tears of laughter, and his claims are altogether devoid of any subtlety or nuance. Thus, I maintain that the book lacks intellectual rigor.

Third, proportionally speaking, this book is about 1% content. The vast majority of actual content can be found in the first few sentences, the last few sentences, and the principle stated in each chapter. Unfortunately, as has been noted in other reviews, all of these principles are utterly pedestrian. The other 99% of the book consists almost exclusively of anecdotes, random quotes, the author repeating himself, and other fluff. I admit that these statements sound extremely hyperbolic, so I will try to give the reader a sense of what the experience of reading this book is actually like. Throughout the book, Carnegie transitions seamlessly from one tiresome anecdote, quote, or other bit of fluff to the next. He’ll spend a few paragraphs describing the time that Theodore Roosevelt was polite to a kitchen maid at the White House; then he’ll drop a loosely-related line from Emerson on which he’ll provide little to no elaboration; that spontaneous Emerson quote will be followed by his gushing effusively over the success of some salesman who took his class; having recollected himself, he will then declare that if there is one thing to take away from his book, it is Principle X; since Principle X is so important, he will repeat himself again for emphasis; finally, Carnegie will make his way back to Theodore Roosevelt (although he seems to have also been quite fond of Abraham Lincoln). As if this weren’t bad enough, the banality is compounded as Carnegie belabors the point that Principle X applies not only in workplace interactions, but also in social interactions, and in familial interactions, too. Queue another story about some president, a quote from Socrates, a plug for his class, and so on. Then queue another story, quote, and plug for good measure. Finally, the monotony is even further compounded by the fact that every single chapter follows this formula. He moves from Principle X, to Principle Y, to Principle Z, and on and on and on. Most readers will have the distinct impression that they are reading the same few paragraphs over and over again. To put it bluntly, in light of its general lack of substance and insane amount of repetition, I submit that the book has little in the way of content.

In closing, I would like to stress that all of the foregoing is simply my personal opinion. I am sure there are many who feel differently about Carnegie’s book, and I am glad that so many people have enjoyed it. Unfortunately, for my part, I found it to be lackluster for the reasons mentioned above.

This book changed my life
By Melissa
This is BY FAR the best book I have ever read. The author has tips in the beginning of the book to help you, one of which is reading through it with a highlighter so you can go through it later and remember things better. I couldn't stress this more. You only remember 10% of what you read (look it up.. cone of learning) so chances are, you won't remember all of it, but being able to flip back through it and skim through the highlighted parts will help enormously.

As for the book, this changed my outlook on life and relationships in ways I never thought would happen. I have always been a blatantly honest person and have prided myself on that. I believe honesty is a trait too many people are lacking in this world. But from reading this book, I was able to see things from a different perspective. For example, "Criticism is futile because it puts a person on the defensive and usually makes him strive to justify himself". As obvious and simple as that is, it's something I did not think much about. Being honest about something, such as telling someone those jeans don't look very good on them, causes them to want to justify their decision to buy/wear those jeans. The author helps you find other ways to approach situations so that you are better able to get people to understand your side of things (or change their mind, or do what you want - depending on the chapter), rather than closing their mind to anything you might have to say. He reminds us that when we are dealing with people, "we are not dealing with creatures of logic, we are dealing with creatures of emotion". It is things like that, that make this book so powerful. He goes into vast detail with examples of each and every fundamental, helping you to understand exactly what he means by each one and how you can try to change it. Using the techniques from his book are hard and will feel unnatural at first, and he even says that, but it opens your mind to things you will wish you had realized years ago.

an extremely important and revealing book
By Michael George
The book is concerned mainly to show how one can “win friends and influence people” in brief encounters, such as situations in which a salesman is trying to make a sale, or a businessman is trying to influence clients. This is clear from the anecdotes that Mr. Carnegie supplies. However, too, he makes it clear that success in these brief encounters can, at least sometimes, achieve not just superficial friendship or temporary influence, but friendships and influence that are deep and last for years. I think that one cannot necessarily expect Mr. Carnegie’s insights into human behavior and psychology to help right away. It might take quite a lot of practice, as it is a developed skill. For example, he focuses on empathy, i.e. on being able to put yourself in the others shoes, and understand their point of view and what they want. This capability is related to many factors, including the types of people one encounters. One might experience significant disappoints. It is important to have persistence and a positive attitude. One criticism that one can level against this book is that it is very old. Is it still of use in today’s world? The book is, at base, a book opening our eyes (if we do not already know) about practical psychology, in brief encounters. His anecdotes may be difficult for a modern reader to relate to, but his insights into behavior remain as valid today as when he wrote the book. This places the book among the classics of "literature", and very valuable to readers still. This is a book that not only do I recommend strongly, but that one “should” read. It is an extremely important and revealing book. I'd give this book 10 stars if I could.
