Excellent book for people who want to learn biomathematics

This is a very nice book for who has some previous knowledge about college math and wants to apply it to modeling some biological problems. Actually, biomath has become more and more popular in the recent years and this book provides a clear and thorough review for some most interesting topics out there. The book serves well as both textbook and reference book. It is very well written, organized, full of examples and the proofs were given in details whenever necessary. Nothing comes out in a sudden and this is very important for a math book. One feature I particularly like is at the beginning of each chapter, some brief review involving the key math technique is given, which saves a lot of time for people like me who almost completely forgot how to solve ODE. BTW, some of the exercises after each chapter are quite challenging but interesting too. Overall, it is a great book and I would recommend it to anyone who want to gain an overall view of biomathematics.

Not the best book around

I have used this book (along with my own notes) to teach second year university students, and every time the students complain that the book is inaccessible. Only after they've gone through the course they find it usable in the sense that they can go back and look things up. My personal feeling about the book is that it doesn't know which leg to stand on. In some aspects it is quite rigorous, but not in an inviting way, whereas in other places it attempts to speak to the intuition but comes up short. I think a cross between this book and the book by Strogatz would be a great compromise.

This book is concise yet includes all the major approaches to studying mathematical biology. It has plenty of exercises and examples for honing the particular skills needed to study different mathematical model of biological systems. I used it as a reference to help write my thesis.

TESOL/ESL departments should have this

I have zero affiliation with the author and can say from a neutral standpoint that this book is truly brilliant.

I NEEDED this when I was teaching classes of 70+ back in Japan, and found that a lot of the organizational tactics of how to develop ideas were highly valuable. Later, more recently I can across Differentiate Instruction and to be very fair I feel Hess is presenting a lot of DI within the activities that allow us to cater to a lot of students at one time - with the same target language but acknowledging the fact that each student will have a different baseline proficiency. Hess does not get too deep into this - but gets into activities that simply work.

A language school and colleges with TESOL/ESL departments should have this, especially ones where large communicative lessons are the "institutes" goal.

Great Book for Mulitlevel Class Ideas and Tips

I really enjoyed browsing this book and will take many ideas from it. I've already use a couple of the ideas, and they were a great success.
It's not all just games and such either. there are suggestions for making learning stations that aren't teacher dependent, and suggestions on how to get the students involved in their own learning responsibilities.

Tried and True!!

This book is tried and true!! The author, Natalie Hess, was my Master's degree advisor, so I had quite a few classes with her. She used EVERY ONE of the ideas in this book with our classes, and in turn, I've used them with mine in the States. Now I'm teaching English in Iraq, and the same techniques STILL work!! Whether you teach ESL, ESOL, EFL, or ANY class, these ideas will work for you!!! Thanks Natalie!!

Great practice...lots of problems!

I bought this book for two HS aged kids who will be taking the ACT in the next couple of years. It is an enormous book, as advertised, with a huge number of practice problems. It has a full length practice test at the beginning of the book that is designed to give users an idea of where they could best spend their time. Then it is broken into chapters representing all areas of the test, each with pages and pages of sample passages and questions. The sample question chapters are broken up into passage similar in format to the real test, so although there are far more questions overall, it as easy to break them into realistic size chunks for practice. It does not have any chapters that are teaching test taking skills or strategies.

I have worked all of the problems in the book now, myself, with the exception of the last math chapter, and I think this is a great resource for brushing up on concepts that will be represented on the test, as well as for general test taking strategies. The book doesn't spend time on specific test taking strategies, but after timing myself on a few tests, I was able to identify sections where I was working too slowly, then try different techniques to move more quickly without missing questions. My times and scores definitely improved as I did more problems, and with SO many problems to do, I made significant improvement in my time.

The book includes explanations of the answers. I was occasionally disappointed in the answers, especially on the reading section, where the answers are a little less black and white, but overall, answers were well explained and I learned a lot from going back through my missed questions. I thought it was most valuable and rewarding to try to understand why a particular problem was incorrect, then go on to another test where I would find a similar question and be able to answer it correctly because of having read a previous explanation. My only concern with my own kids is that they will not be patient enough to go back through every missed problem to understand WHY, and I feel like that is where the learning really happens. Of course, this could be a problem with any set of practice problems.

As the book says right from the beginning, it is no substitute for The Real ACT Prep book, which has a new 2016-2017 Edition available. It includes 3 actual ACT tests from previous years. I also have that book, and I like that it includes more thorough descriptions of why answers are NOT correct. It also includes whole chapters about improving your score on a particular section of the test, which is very useful! I did the first practice test (a real test from a previous year) in the Real ACT Prep book, and was impressed with how similar the problems from this 5 lb. book are to the questions on the real test.

Mostly good but too much ambiguity.

I'm an ACT tutor and I use this book with many of my tutoring students. I like this more than many of the unofficial problem books because of the variety of questions and organization. I do wish there was a longer trig section, as most students need more practice than the book provides. When compared to actual ACT problems these are often vaguely worded or have multiple interpretations that I wouldn't normally encounter. I'm considering providing 'update notes' to my students to correct these, which I feel like I shouldn't need to do.

I'm an 11th grade English teacher and I buy a lot of ACT books. I think I have close to 20. This is going to be my favorite one. The way I tutor students is to review the skills that a student needs. This book approaches a passage with the intent to break down each question by skill. This is going to save me a lot of time labeling questions. The charts after each passage are great. I looked at the math section and it is equally organized by skill.

About the Author
Philippe Goddin was born in 1944. Hie is considered to be one of the top experts on Herge's life and oeuvre. he has been studying Herge's art for more than 30 years, and has published several books on the subject. He was lucky enough to know Herge and to be acquainted with many of his friends and colleagues. Most of the documents produced in this series come from the Studios Herge where Philippe Goddin directed the research and archives for more than 10 years.

Insight into the later years of the Master

Continuing with the same format that has become standard for books that research Tintin, very similar to the size that the original Tinin albums came, including the numbering at the bottom with a little circle around, this book is a nice hard bound reference to keep.

The book tracks Herge chronologically as he goes about his intriguing life and his creation, through the unfolding of ideas, concept sketches, story and the final product.

A must have well rounded series for the Tintin/Herge fan, and of course for anyone interested in Tintin.

Interesting enough, but.....

This third part of the series, as the previous 2 is interesting enough. Just the amount of graphic material makes this a volume worth purchasing. However, the content is not nearly enough. Just little bits of information is offered on some of the albums and it seems like the whole series has summarized the original ones in French "Chronologie d'une oeuvre' . This results in some paragraphs seldom making any sense and a lot of interesting information missed.
Overall, I would strongly recommend purchasing the original series (7 volumes) in French. However, that is currently unavailable in the US

About the Author

Rohinton Emmanuel is a Reader in Sustainable Design and Construction, and the Director of the Centre for Energy and the Built Environment at Glasgow Caledonian University, UK. He has pioneered the inquiry of urban climate change in warm regions and has taught�and consulted on subjects including climate and environment sensitive design, building energy efficiency, and thermal comfort. He has authored over 50 research papers in the areas of climate change in the built environment, building and urban energy efficiency and thermal comfort and a book related to these efforts, An Urban Approach to Climate Sensitive Design: Strategies for the Tropics, was published by Routledge in 2005.

Keith Baker is a Researcher in Sustainable Urban Environments at the Centre for Energy and the Built Environment at Glasgow Caledonian University. He is also a member of the Scottish Carbon Accounting Group, and�a founder member of ICARB (the Initiative for Carbon) and a long standing columnist on electronic waste for The Display Standard, a trade publication for the electronics industry. Keith's main research interests are in climate change, energy, the built environment, and the environmental impact of technology.

The book is applicable to both existing and new buildings. It is a proper manual with 100s of references - a serious title on carbon management.
