BENJAMIN GARDNER is an associate professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington Bothell, where he teaches global studies, cultural studies, and environmental studies. He is also the chair of the African Studies Program at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington.

Can neoliberal economics offer people like the Maasai opportunity and at the same time conserve Tanzania's natural heritage?

This is an informative book on a topic of considerable importance. Be aware that it is not a natural history, not essays about wildlife and conservation, and not a book that environmentalists in general will like. It should strongly appeal to a fairly narrow readership, those interested in the interplay between governments and other actors on the national and local levels in the context of conserving African wildlife. Gardner has wide experience in Tanzania; this is essentially an academic study, although rather more accessible than such studies usually are. Gardner is not easily described; the book uses terms like "political ecology" but I'd say policy studies and economics are aspects as well.

The specific area is the Liliondo area (and adjacent lands) in Tanzania, populated on the local level mostly by Maasai. The book covers about two decades of Masaai dealing with their national government, outside corporations, NGOs and the implications of an increasingly dominant neoliberalism (think of the Chicago school of economics, although it's more than that). The book provides historical context, such as Tanzania's vaguely socialist period (ending about 1985, with neoliberalism increasingly dominant in the country since).

Among the issues are ownership of land: a grazing commons such as is Maasai tradition seems to neoliberalism to be inefficient and wasteful, and in Loliondo leasing or selling land to organizations or companies that offer safari expeditions (he cites on estimate that one hunter spends as much in Tanzania as 50 to 100 non-hunting tourists) and some that offer other expeditions. The Maasai in this area, says Gardner, find the neoliberal approach to offer some possibilities to better preserve their rights and control over development, mostly by negotiating directly with outsiders. The Maasai as well benefit from increasing world interest in traditional peoples. Their position in the country is uncertain, because Tanzania is short on financial resources and local bureaucrats (as bureaucrats anywhere) don't particularly like resistance. The basic issue is land ownership, which to the Maasai is tied up with their group identity.

That's the book. I hope it doesn't sound too dry, it really is full of information. A lurking presence is the future. As I was writing this, I looked up some population projections. The 11 million Tanzanians of 1963 grew to 44 million in 2014 and will be 100 million by mid-century, with an end of century projection of 200 to 400 million. The country will strain to feed, educate and create employment for these people, and the Serengeti will have to produce substantial income to justify Tanzania's large investment in conservation, or its future is moot. Population projections for nearby nations also show sharp growth: Kenya for example by mid-century may exceed 100 million.

Love me some mature couples romance!

I finished this book right before going to bed. I might or might not had a dream featuring Durante...oh my.

No time for a long review, but will leave you with some random thoughts: I loved that, again, Billy proved that mature couples (she's pushing 40 and he's mid-40) make great romance reads! Loved Ella and Durante! She was nutty, and he the calm to her crazy. I liked that the personalities of the characters were captured in the tone and cadance of the narrative.

And Durante: that name is so on point!

On the side characters: I like how in Billy's books her protagonists are not operating in a bubble. The interaction with the side characters is very intense and crucial to the story development. The new introduced characters in this story, cheeky son Rufus and disturbed Arlo who got to redeem himself after his misguided actions in a A Life Sublime (Italian Knights series Book 5) by Billy London, were a blast. That sister Angela though, such a b*tch.

On the maffia drama: very undercooled written, no exaggerations. Things happened because they needed to happen and I totally bought it.

On Lucca: I've been to Lucca and this book was a great revisit. Well done, Billy, for capturing the essence of Lucca.

(I'm extracting a star, because there were some edit issues. In spelling but also some abrupt turns in scenes that read like details were left off. And I needed full disclosure on Ella's past dealings before Rufus was born. I was unsatisfied with the minimal explanation given.)

I enjoy the Italian Knight series immensely. This book wasnt as humorous as the last 5 books, but it still a good read. I would have like to have known more about Ella's past, like how she managed to shoot and arrow and handle a powerful weapon. The gun battle, i would have liked to have Da Canavezes mafia help with Durante & Ella's battle.
It was good to see the Arlo has now become apart of the family and he treats Rufus like a real brother (unlike Enzo).

Before you decide to end the series Billy, I would like for Beppe & Mimi to have their own book. Its a lot of chemistry there. Also, Paul and Sofia needs a book too. I really want to know if she will have a kid(s) with Paul.

I loved the dynamic and chemistry between Durante and Ella

I was so excited to read this book. Durante made an appearance in “A life Sublime”. He was described as Nick and Paul’s hot uncle. I loved the dynamic and chemistry between Durante and Ella. This is a story of finding love when you have so much baggage and demons that will not allow you to lay them to rest. The supporting characters added to the story.

You are introduced to Ella, her son Rufus and her crazy family in London. I loved that Rufus was a miniature Ella, in his frankness. It’s like God’s cosmic joke on parents, giving you a child that is a carbon copy of you. The dynamic between Ella and her mother (Constance) and/or sister (Angela) was crazy. Rose (“Kissing the Canvas”) has nothing on Constance. We also get to see how resourceful and skilled Ella truly is….I feel like we buried the lead with this piece. Hopefully there will be novella providing some background on Ella’s past prior to the first marriage.

For fans of the IK series, this book was like a gift basket of stuff. This book takes place at the same time as “A life Sublime” and “The Claim”. This book allows you to see the dynamics between Durante and his family. You get a glimpse of who Massimo was in his prime. What it was like for his family to be related to someone rising in the criminal underworld. We get to attend Massimo and Belinda’s wedding in this book. The crazy antics between Nick, Gina, Paul and Sofia continue. The wedding toasts had me in tears laughing. Arlo’s story is continued beginning with Massimo shipping him to Italy. (Arlo needs his own story)

Ella and Durante have officially become my favorite couple in the IK series.

Well done Ms. London. You never disappoint.

About the Author
Roger Godement ( born 1. October 1921) is known for his work in functional analysis and also his expository books. He started as a student at the �cole normale sup�rieure in 1940, where he became a student of Henri Cartan. He started research into harmonic analysis on locally compact abelian groups, finding a number of major results; this work was in parallel but independent of similar investigations in the USSR and Japan. Work on the abstract theory of spherical functions published in 1952 proved very influential in subsequent work, particularly that of Harish-Chandra. The isolation of the concept of square-integrable representation is attributed to him. The Godement compactness criterion in the theory of arithmetic groups was a conjecture of his. He later worked with Jacquet on the zeta function of a simple algebra. He was an active member of the Bourbaki group in the early 1950s, and subsequently gave a number of significant Bourbaki seminars. He also took part in the Cartan seminar. He also wrote texts on Lie groups, abstract algebra and mathematical analysis.

About the Author
William Pride (Ph.D., Louisiana State University) is a professor of marketing in the Mays Business School, Texas A&M University. In addition to this text, he is co-author of a market-leading Principles of Marketing text. Dr. Pride's research interests include advertising, promotion, and distribution channels, and his research articles have appeared in major professional journals, such as the JOURNAL OF MARKETING, the JOURNAL OF MARKETING RESEARCH, the JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF MARKETING SCIENCE, and the JOURNAL OF ADVERTISING. Dr. Pride is a member of the American Marketing Association, Academy of Marketing Science, Society for Marketing Advances, and the Marketing Management Association. He has received the Marketing Fellow Award from the Society of Marketing Advances and the Marketing Innovation Award from the Marketing Management Association. Both of these are lifetime achievement awards.

Robert J. Hughes (PhD, University of North Texas) specializes in business administration and college instruction. He has taught Introduction to Business for more than 35 years both on campus and online for Richland College, one of seven campuses that is part of the Dallas County Community College District. In addition to BUSINESS and FOUNDATIONS OF BUSINESS, published by Cengage Learning, he has authored college textbooks in personal finance and business mathematics; served as a content consultant for two popular national television series, "It's Strictly Business" and "Dollars & Sense: Personal Finance for the 21st Century"; and is the lead author for a business math project utilizing computer-assisted instruction funded by the ALEKS Corporation. He also is active in many academic and professional organizations and has served as a consultant and investment adviser to individuals, businesses, and charitable organizations. Dr. Hughes is the recipient of three different Teaching in Excellence Awards at Richland College. Jack R. Kapoor (EdD, Northern Illinois University) is professor of business and economics in the Business and Technology Division at the College of DuPage, where he has taught Introduction to Business, Marketing, Management, Economics, and Personal Finance since 1969. He previously taught at Illinois Institute of Technology's Stuart School of Management, San Francisco State University's School of World Business, and other colleges. Professor Kapoor was awarded the Business and Services Division's Outstanding Professor Award for 1999-2000. He served as an Assistant National Bank Examiner for the U.S. Treasury Department and as an international trade consultant to Bolting Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Mumbai, India. Dr. Kapoor is known internationally as a coauthor of several textbooks, including FOUNDATIONS OF BUSINESS, 4E (Cengage Learning); has served as a content consultant for the popular national television series "The Business File: An Introduction to Business"; and developed two full-length audio courses in business and personal finance. He has been quoted in many national newspapers and magazines, including USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, the Chicago Sun-Times, Crain's Small Business, the Chicago Tribune, and other publications. Dr. Kapoor has traveled around the world and has studied business practices in capitalist, socialist, and communist countries.

Business Will Get You Going!

I had to rent the latest 12 edition for my Intro to Business course, because it was very expensive to purchase. I wanted a copy for my home library and ended up purchasing the 11th edition, which I found to be structured the same as the 12th. This book is excellent, and if you are interested or belong in business in any capacity, I would recommend owning it as it covers everything from business types, organization, finance, marketing, and so much more in the business world. There are real world examples and great questions that those in business may come across and need for reference purposes. Excellent read!

Really good book, has a lot of cases that will teach you about the real world of business. Real easy to read and learn from. I loved it, but it was lacking of something. They had questions that helped me for my tests and the information is up to date a useful. I would recommend if youre trying to learn about business.

YA Although not an author whom average readers would associate with mysteries, Asimov has actually written several good ones. This collection contains 31 short pieces that are among his personal favorites. Two sections contain his series stories, the ``Black Widower'' and the ``Union Club'' mysteries. Brief introductions to each section and story will serve to acquaint readers with the general background of the series. A third section contains miscellaneous mysteries. All are clear and entertaining. This is a book to be read on ``a little here, a little there'' basis. The stories are short, and prolonged reading results in a series of mental stops and starts that are wearying. Also, the stories are written according to a set formula. However, read on the installment plan, the book is worth the effort. If the recent spate of series in juvenile publishing is any guide, this collection should please adolescents, including reluctant readers. Karl Penny, Houston Public Library

How'd this guy write so much so well?

"Almost every mystery story I write belongs to the 'armchair detective' variety. Our hero listens to a puzzling story of some kind that seems to have no solution and, taking into account only what he is told, comes up with the answer in so cogent a fashion that every other character in the story (and the reader, too) is at once convinced of its legitimacy.... My stories are, in short, not exercises in violence, not thrillers, not psychological suspense stories. They are, generally speaking, puzzles, and rather intellectual ones."

Now that I've quoted the author, let me add that most but not all of these puzzles were too tough for me. Then, when the solution was revealed, I was invariably like, "Aw, I'm a stupe!" I'd say he set out to emulate the whodunits he loved and wound up topping them instead. I've never seen any better, or even equal, and I highly recommend this collection to anyone who loves puzzles of any description. As an added bonus, the masterful prose of Mr. Asimov. Get this book.

31 short stories, mostly Black Widower and Union Club

The short stories herein fall into 3 categories: Black Widower mysteries (15), Union Club mysteries (9), and miscellaneous (7). The Black Widower mysteries are a cross-section of the first 4 Black Widower short story collections, while the Union Club mysteries can be found in THE UNION CLUB MYSTERIES.

Many of Asimov's mysteries resemble crossword puzzles, in that they have only one "correct" solution - and have about as much believable characterization, with the exception of some recurring characters when considered over time.

I'll begin with the miscellaneous stories, although they appear last in the book. While some feature recurring characters who have been collected elsewhere, others are one-shot efforts written around a single gimmick for a magazine, and haven't been collected much.

"The Key", the 4th Wendell Urth story, turns on Jennings, a former student of Urth's who as the story opens faces lonely death on the Moon as the price of protecting an alien artifact; Urth afterwards seems the best chance of working out Jennings' only clue to the hiding-place. [The story suffers from dying-clue syndrome: an obscure clue left by a dying man that stumps people with *far* more time to consider it.]

Professor Neddring hands "A Problem of Numbers" to Hal, his graduate student and would-be son-in-law, to hear how Hal's mind works before Neddring will give his blessing. [Come on - an advisor who's known a student long enough for the romantic entanglement to occur ought to know Hal well enough at *this* late date, but passing judgement based on analyzing a *cryptogram*???] The puzzle resembles that used in "Unique Is Where You Find It" in PUZZLES OF THE BLACK WIDOWERS.

Clara and Hester, killing time together on a hot day, agree that it's "The Little Things" they can't stand. In Clara's case, her upstairs neighbour isn't answering her door, and the sound of a dripping faucet is driving Clara to distraction. But Mrs. Maclauren didn't mention any trip to Hester, who normally looks after her plants if she's away...

In "Halloween", an idealist stole some plutonium to prove a point about weak security, then died in a freak accident, leaving only a single dying word to reveal its location.

Two of Asimov's mysteries featuring Larry - a detective's teenage son, a la Encyclopedia Brown - appear. In "The Thirteenth Day of Christmas", there's been a bomb threat against the Soviet delegation to the UN for Christmas Day - but Christmas came and went without incident. In "The Key Word", Larry's father has a _New York Times_ crossword puzzle as a clue on an important case.

"Nothing Might Happen" is the only non-puzzle story in this book, having been written for the non-puzzle-based ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE. Sam Gelderman endures life as his quirky author uncle's secretary by keeping his future inheritance in mind. True, his uncle might well outlive him, but Sam could *never* hope to pull off a perfect murder.

The Black Widowers stories compensate somewhat for the character development issue. Being based on real-life members of Asimov's own friends in the Trap Door Spiders, the club members' characters over the course of many stories have developed some personality. However, their guests - and the people their guests' problems involve - *do* often suffer from weak/implausible characterization.

"The Obvious Factor", "The Pointing Finger", "Out of Sight", and "Yankee Doodle Went to Town" are 4 of the 12 stories comprising TALES OF THE BLACK WIDOWERS - but not the first four, or those most significant to the club members themselves.

"Quicker Than the Eye", "The Three Numbers", and "The One and Only East" appear in MORE TALES OF THE BLACK WIDOWERS.

"The Cross of Lorraine", "The Next Day", "What Time Is It?", and "Middle Name" appear in CASEBOOK OF THE BLACK WIDOWERS.

"Sixty Million Trillion Combinations", "The Good Samaritan", "Can You Prove It?" and "The Redhead" appear in BANQUETS OF THE BLACK WIDOWERS. "The Good Samaritan" lets Asimov have a little fun with the Widowers by introducing a female guest to the sacred precincts, while "The Redhead" is based on a dream Asimov had.

Asimov's Union Club stories, like the Black Widower stories, involve several club members who bat around a problem before the resident genius solves the problem. The 9 (out of 30-odd) UC stories selected for this collection were: "He Wasn't There", "Hide and Seek", "Dollars and Cents", "The Sign", "Getting the Combination", "The Library Book", "Never Out of Sight", "The Magic Umbrella", and "The Speck". Again like the BW stories, the UC stories are based around 1-gimmick puzzles; however, I find them less appealing. The UC members don't have the friendly (though argumentative) relationship of the BWs, and Griswold is the antithesis of his gentle BW counterpart, Henry: abrasively arrogant where Henry is self-effacing. Also, there's a sameness to the UC stories: Griswold is *always* the puzzle-setter, reminiscing about long ago issues, so they're not really worked out by reasoning in real-time; the other UC members try and fail to reason out the puzzle, then nag Griswold into revealing the answer.
