With a writer of Connelly’s popularity, particularly one that works with a regular cast of characters, mixed reviews are to be expected. Each successive book opens the possibility of a narrative letdown. Part of Connelly’s decision to collate a few of his most enduring characters into The Narrows was to address concerns many fans had with the ending of The Poet. Though it strikes a few critics as a risky move that doesn’t bear repeating, the general consensus is that Connelly pulls the sequel off. Some reviewers disagree about whether the back-story is ample enough for the uninitiated. But whether The Narrows is his best or his worst work, its has elements of both, and plenty of the subtle characterization and gripping storyline that fans have come to expect from Connelly.

*Starred Review* Too often when crime novelists bring together characters from different series or combine plot strands from earlier novels, the results seem awkward (like inviting two separate groups of friends to the same party). Not so with Connelly, whose latest Harry Bosch novel seamlessly intermingles material from the author's previous work. Readers of Connelly's The Poet (1996) have known that Bob Backus, former FBI profiler turned Poe-spouting serial killer, would be back eventually, and here he is, attempting to stage-manage a grand finale. Bosch, now a PI after retiring from the LAPD, becomes involved when the wife of FBI agent Terry McCaleb (Blood Work and A Darkness More Than Night) hires him to determine if her husband's death was suicide or murder. The trail leads quickly to Las Vegas and the resurfaced Backus, who is being tracked by his former FBI colleagues, including his onetime protege Rachel Walling (also from The Poet). Expertly juggling the narrative between Bosch's brooding, hard-boiled voice and a broader third-person perspective that takes in the points of view of Walling and the Poet, Connelly builds tension exponentially through superb use of dramatic irony. A stunning finale in the Narrows--the cement-lined Los Angeles River, which transforms itself during a storm from a harmless puddle into a rampaging death trap--works on multiple levels, satisfying both plot-hungry suspense addicts and character-driven Bosch devotees, who will stick with their hero--he of the "seen-it-all-twice eyes"--on his journey into the metaphorical narrows, where evil "would grab at me like an animal and take me down into the black water." Stories within a bigger story

Harry Bosch has retired from the LAPD and is trying to drum up business for his new career as a private investigator. He lands a case, probably the last one he wants, to investigate the death of good friend Terry McCaleb who was an FBI agent before his own retirement.
In the course of his investigation Harry stumbles on a huge excavation taking place off Zzyzx Road, a nowhere junction along I-15 between LA and Las Vegas. (I’ve seen it several times and it always provoked a laugh.) Turns out the excavators are FBI folks and they are finding a number of bodies whose deaths point to a nemesis called The Poet.
One of the FBI agents at the “big dig” is Rachel Walling, an old friend of Bosch who’s been brought down from her office in South Dakota to help. She’s been warned about taking too aggressive a role in this investigation but she does have a good reason to participate fully; The Poet is a psycho named Backus who was Rachel’s FBI mentor many years before.
Bosch is not welcomed by the FBI; they don’t want any help from a retired LA police officer, thank-you-very-much. But Bosch doesn’t care about that because he has his own case to worry about. And since he’s in the Las Vegas vicinity, it’s a great opportunity to get over to “Sin City” and see his daughter, Maddie, who lives there with her mother, Eleanor.
Backus is also the master of many disguises and is watching everyone closely. As you might suspect, “outsiders” Bosch and Walling get together (in several ways) to hunt and find Backus in a tension-filled ending.

Another One Bites The Dust . . .

Book,that is! You didn't think I was going to give anything away,did you? No, that would be too easy - you're going to have to do it the enjoyable way; page by page,chapter by chapter!
What can I say? Michael Connelly has set the hook and Is reeling this fish in! I'm sure his and Amazon's bottom line will be happy. Start with his first Bosch novel - now!
None are disappointing, all are immensely readable, as was true with The Narrows.

Very Good, But Not Among His Best

The crossover books that cover multiple main characters frequently tend to have to much ground to cover on all sides to satisfy the readers of each series. This generally means that the main story itself must be simpler, as was the case with this one whee the villain was revealed very early on. Also, the attempted twist at the end was not really very well conceived, as it essentially meant that it truly was a major coincidence that Bosch became heavily involved in the case at all. While potentially heavily ironic for those familiar with that character, it was also quite unbelievable. However, even with those shortcomings, this was still a very good read. The pacing was generally good and the use of multiple settings to develop the story also worked well.

So Simple It's Brilliant

I have tried many organizing systems, but my focus has always been on finding ways to get more things done at once within an inhumanly unforgiving time frame. I'd always start out strong due to enthusiasm and novelty and always end up burning out at some point.

I never thought of the simple, yet totally logical, idea of getting more done by pursuing less goals at once. I combined this system with David Allen's Getting Things Done and it's been a very thorough, sustainable method. I use Getting Things Done to put all my aims out of my head and onto paper, but use Power of Less to make sure I only chase no more than three goals at a time. Everything else I put on my Someday/Maybe list.

One Goal

The minimalist beauty of the Haiku poetry form is attractive because the central thought, though it may be nuanced, is simple and easy to decipher and enjoy. Imagine transferring this simplicity to your lifestyle and countering the Illiad like push to expand our lives to fit in more and more activities, more and more things, more commitments, more goals, and on and on until we come to the point where we realize that we just cannot handle anything more and break down. Leo Babauta's new book The Power of Less is a turn in the other direction.

Many other books of this type encourage and attempt to teach skills for handling an ever-increasing set of goals, projects, and tasks. These systems are complex in design and often involve myriad lists and charts and numerous steps of analysis and planning. Some people may thrive in this environment and truly enjoy taking on more commitments but there is always a twin pair of risks. The first is that the next task we take on might be the one that breaks us down. Second, these complex planning systems can consume our attention and become the focus themselves.

Babauta suggests a different approach: shedding distractions, simplifying and narrowing your focus in order to improve your life and increase your performance. His system is built around the notion of limiting yourself to only the most important things and ruthlessly treating everything else as a distraction to be avoided. As you read, you begin to realize how many things that you now see as necessary (the little chime announcing each incoming email) are really distractions that are keeping you from accomplishing the things that you deem most important.

Consider your list of goals right now. You may have two or three or even more goals. If you're the type who sets goals for yourself then you probably also divide your attention amongst these goals as you work toward their accomplishment. Leo suggests a different approach. Select the most important goal and devote all of your attention to attaining it. Your attention will be more focused, your stress reduced (because you won't be trying to keep multiple plates spinning), and your motivation enhanced as you work toward the goal. When the first is finished - and only then - you start on the next. Simplifying in this fashion will not only improve your overall performance, you'll find yourself happier as you discover that those things you once thought were crucial were really just distracting you from reaching your most important objectives.

Leo offers this approach up for consideration in many personal and professional areas in Less. Filing, email, and the Internet all threaten to overwhelm us if we let them. What if you only checked you email twice a day? What is the worse thing that would happen? How about unplugging from the Internet? How many times have projects become sidetracked by a quick troll through your favorites bookmarks that turns into an hour or two? In so many areas, Leo points out how many times we have become dissatisfied with ourselves because we have allowed the multitude of things demanding our attention to distract us from what we want to accomplish. Removing clutter from our life, home, and work allows us to focus on what is truly important and to find greater personal joy and satisfaction.

The Power of Less is the exact opposite of The Seven Habits... though both seek the same end, greater personal performance and achievement. If you've spent hours developing your mission and moving big rocks around and still find yourself unsatisfied, give Babauta's ideas a try. Simplify, reduce, and de-clutter and you may just discover the one or two things that are most important to you buried beneath.

How, To Reduce Stress By Reducing Stuff

I have been working diligently on de cluttering my personal and business life. I have read so many simplifying and de-cluttering and efficiency books I almost have a clutter problem with all the books on the subject. (Cured that recently too with the Kindle 2.)
I run three business. One brick and morter and two online. I was getting over four hundred emails a day and was drowning in mail and spam. So I utilized ideas / suggestions from several sources to cure my problems. From the Four Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss we started using detailed faq's lists on our websites and an auto-responder that answered many questions so we would no longer have to reply to as many emails. For the ones we do answer the questions are predictable and we saved the answers as email drafts that way we just cut and paste and all done.

For the Spam we ran our eight email accounts into one google mail as they have the best spam filters and you can reply from the email address to which the mail was sent so they dont know that anything is happening. And suggestions from the life hacker Upgrade Your Life: The Lifehacker Guide to Working Smarter, Faster, Better by Gina Tripani has some interesting ideas for sure.

Keeping your inbox empty we use suggestions from Stress Less and Zen to Done by Leo Babauta and you would not believe how much better you feel when things are under control. But it is you who must Work the system or you will be overwhelmed again.

A much more detailed program is used in Getting Things Done David Allen book, but the above is kind of the simplified version that I currently prefer.

And for just getting rid of all the clutter in your life any of the books from Peter Walsh, How to Organize (Just About) Everything, and Enough Already, are great even though they tend to recover some of the material from his other books somewhat but thats not a big deal since the info is worth repeating. Another good author but she covers pretty much the same thing is Julie Morgenstern.

The books by Koch on the 80/20 principle are also worth looking into. For the paper clutter in my life I have a digital sender scanner and have scanned over four full file cabinets into Adobe PDF computer files. I have done this with pictures too as you can also save them info Jpeg and Jiff files. While there are tons more books out there and I seem to have most of them, these are the best to get things under control and to get you the time to do the things that matter to you.

All in all a good book to put us on the road to less.

A very worthwhile addition to such reports.

Really excellent. It avoids all the repetitious expeditionary chapters and concentrates on the mountains and the climbing. But, best of all, are the fine pictures, most of which were taken by Hinkes. Despite a shelf full of books on these peaks, I really enjoyed this latest report. Recommended highly.

About the Author

Sharon Asakawa and her husband Bruce are, without question, the most highly respected gardening experts in California. Sharon has been part of the nursery industry for decades. She began working in their family gardening center shortly after marrying Bruce in the early 1960s. Ultimately, she was in charge of the floral department where she gained hands-on practical experience. As their business grew, Sharon and Bruce began leading garden tours to great locales around the world, helping introduce the garden travelers to notable gardens and plants. Fantastic for the Succulent Lover

I've been working with succulents for the past 2 years, I've been looking for a book that will help me group the certain groups of succulents together to make beautiful container gardens. I had some great ones, but I realized this one wasn't getting enough water or one was getting burned. Mr. Bagnasco really helped me on that subject, he breaks it down very well. So I was so glad when I found this book, it's a lot better than the more expensive ones. I highly recommend this book to succulents lovers everywhere.

Her passion for quality is only surpassed by her innovative and creative genius. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this book for any botanical fashionistas looking to add succulents in their life. Robyn makes the spaces around her better.

Informative and Inspirational

This book is rich with information about succulents and how to successfully grow them in a variety of ways. Examples: beds, terrariums, vertical wall, pallet garden, etc. Step-by-step directions are given. A very helpful "first aid" section is also included. I learned some tips on why my plants didn't always thrive. I'm planning on buying two more books for other gardeners in my family.

This is one of the most informative books I have ever read. Not only have my wife and I flown for free three times last year, but we have two more trips for free coming up this year. Just Brilliant!!!

My writing career is closely linked to reading. You need to know what others are saying about your field/career. Not only that but it is vital to consume the right amount of information in a short time because time is a limited resource.
So when I was sent a free review copy, I jumped at the opportunity and I was not disappointed too.
I believe this book has the right amount of content to make it a practical guide to speed reading and comprehension. It reminded me of some aspects I had learnt previously and also introduced some unique content.
What I have gained from reading
1. Prefixes and Suffixes and how they help with comprehension

2. I was reminded about pre-reading before reading the material and the benefits of such action.

3. I also understood that a really good speed reader, pre-reads the material by gaze reading, and then moves to fixation to fixation reading.

4. The section on helping children is brilliant!

More then just "fast reading" this book stresses the importance of full comprehension of the text being read. There is no point in being able to read fast if you do not fully understand what you just read. The book starts of with 16 different examples, from which you can choose and combine those that seem relevant to your reading style. I really liked the tips on how to improve comprehension on exams; I have found this helpful in everyday reading and exam reading alike. I have been using the "notebook" suggestions and already see my vocabulary building, a step that will defiantly help me increase my reading comprehension and speed.

How to quickly and easily improve your reading comprehension skills not only teaches you, but it also teaches you to learn more easily in the future. It has ways for you to improve your reading comprehension as much as possible as quickly as possible.

If you are contemplating starting a Typescript project I highly recommend this book

Many developers want to dive right in and start learning a new language and many times they fail to take advantage of all the strengths of the language. If you are contemplating starting a Typescript project I highly recommend this book. It will not waste your time. The organization of this book allows the beginner to easily learn how to apply object oriented concepts to JavaScript. It also allows more advanced developers to skim through and find things they were not aware of. The book also covers many things you will need when developing large Typescript projects. For example, chapter six covers the integration of RequireJS, NuGet and Knockout. Typescript Essentials is a concise source of information on how to do object oriented development around JavaScript. It would be difficult to gather all this information from the multiple sources on the internet.

Too shallow

I got a review copy of this book and did not find in it the answers I was looking for. It might be OK for a newbie developer who has never built a web-app, but for an experienced professional it is too shallow.

It explains the language constructs well enough, but you don't need a book for that. This is already explained on http://www.typescriptlang.org/Handbook

It makes some forais into OO principles but there are much better books for this subject. Furthermore, TypeScript could be a good functional language too. OO is no requirement for using it.

When it comes to the tool set, I was disappointed that only VisualStudio gets named. True enough TS is a Microsoft backed language and it has probably a good support in Visual Studio. Nevertheless, I had expected to learn about integrating TS with my JS projects where I use Grunt. In any case, at least one command line tool to automate the building of my application would have been helpful.

Bottom line: if you never built a web-app and use VisualStudio you will find some useful information.

Perhaps not essential, but very handy

You could probably learn Typescript from the documentation. But having a text like this hold your hand at least for a while will certainly cut your learning curve.
