This is an advanced, technical work written by a leading theoretician. McClelland examines motivation in the personality and behaviorist traditions. He focuses on the dimensions of personality which drive behavior: achievement, power, affiliative, and avoidance motives. This work explores motivation in the context of trends in society, cognitive effects, values and skills, and training. Provides an enormous bibliography. This work is a classic and deserves careful reading by anyone deeply interested in the subject of motivation. Highly recommended!

This book is highly comprehensive textbook of the research into human motivation from the perspective of a powerful and innovative thinker. It is indicative of the author that it was out of date the day it was published, but is still a valuable text.

McClelland's research approach is better reflected in his journal articles though

Actually, I, Joe, purchased the book, not Julie. McClelland is especially known for research on achievement motivation, but I was interested in his approach to motivation overall. The book is largely a survey of different approaches to studying motivation; it is written as a textbook. There is also another book on human motivation edited by McClelland that is a collection of articles written by various authors including McClelland. This is not that book. McClelland's research approach is better reflected in his journal articles though.

About the Author
J. David Cooper (Ed.D., Indiana University) is a retired professor from Ball State University. Active in the International Reading Association, he has spoken in all 50 states and eight countries. Dr. Cooper has authored or coauthored more than 20 books on the teaching of reading. He has served as an editor of Indiana Reading Quarterly and as a reviewer for such leading journals as The Reading Teacher, Journal of Reading, and National Reading Conference Yearbook. Currently, Dr. Cooper consults on literacy instruction with numerous school districts throughout the United States.

Nancy D. Kiger (Ed.D., Ball State University) has more than 40 years of experience in education. She is retired from the College of Education at the University of Central Florida, where for 15 years she taught courses in reading, language arts, and children's literature as well as supervised student teachers. She also taught at universities in Indiana and Missouri. She began teaching as an elementary classroom teacher; later she taught reading at the elementary and middle-school levels in Indiana. This new millennium belongs to biotechnology. Rapid progress is being made in minerals processing based on biological principles. Microorganisms can play a beneficial role in all facets of minerals processing, from mining to waste disposal and management. Biohydrometallurgical extraction of metals from a wide variety of ores is being commercially practiced all over the world and especially in Canada, the United States, Russia, South America, Australia, and Europe. The interactions among biotechnology, metals, and minerals are relevant to a number of emerging in interdisciplinary areas such as biogenesis and biomineralization, biomaterials processing and biomimetics, ceramics and biomedical engineering, biomineral beneficiation, bioleaching, biocorrosion, biofouling, biodeterioration, and bioenvironmental control. This book contains 18 articles divvied into four main sections titled Biobeneficiation; Bioleaching; Bioremediation; and Biominerilaztion. Written by industry experts, the book provides the technical knowledge necessary to complete in this arena by presenting specific detailed technologies and real-world case studies.

Favorite book ever, as reviewed by a bibliophile!

Yes, this book is extremely graphic, and might be too much so for some readers. However, and this is a big however, every American needs to read it! The atrocities that we perpetuated during Jim Crow is something that is not taught in most schools. Yes, it is touched upon, but this is a topic that needs to be heard from someone who grew up in the South during this most tragic time period and witnessed the murders, tortures and utter violence.

Moody gives us a glimpse into what it was like to be a young black female growing up in that place at that time. It inspired me to take a road trip across Mississippi tracing the locations that she mentions. It was a sad trip, but I felt it was a good way for me (a white woman from the east coast) to get a better understanding of what actually happened.

I have purchased at least ten copies over the years and given to many friends who seemed interested in the topic.

This is by far my favorite book I have ever read--which includes thousands!

This book had a few typos, I hate to see that in any read. That aside I really loved this book and didn't want it to end. Ms Moody, a great woman and a great activist. I want to thank her for writing the book and above all I want to thank her for fighting for my rights. I enjoyed the whole book, but, really liked the portion on Ms Moody's involvement with the struggle for civil rights. I mean I almost cried when she spoke of how black people she knew and some she didn't know died for my human rights. I respect all who suffered so that I may have the right to vote or walk the streets without fear of being hanged because of the color of my skin. I must say at this point that I appreciate my white bothers and sisters for helping in my right to be free. What got to me even more while reading this book is the fact that young children and teenagers had the courage to stand up and speak out at a time when speaking out against racism could and normally did mean death! I can't say enough about this book. As far as I'm concerned it should be required reading in all high schools, because this book is relevant even in todays society.

A Amazing Story That Is A Must Read!!!!!!

I haven't finished a book in a few days in a very long time. My aunt and I are always sharing great reads so when she told me to read it, I never thought about reading the synopsis to see what this story was about. I just knew that we would discuss it along the way. When I first began reading this book, I had no idea it would have lead down the path of the civil rights movement, because in the beginning I was just thought it was a hilarious book about someone's childhood. I loved the way this story was written because it reminded me of what it must have been like when my mother was growing up. Soon I realized that it was no longer a funny story, but an unbelievable, well written, detailed story of Anne's life. Yes I know of the struggles that have been documented, details of some of the well known key players in the struggle, and much more; but for the first time, I felt like there was a personal connection between her story and everyday people like my family. As I continued reading, I began to have more and more questions that I needed answers to. It was great to hear the voice of someone who was not known world wide because readers like myself could make personal connection with this story that one wouldn't necessarily make with some of the more popular well-known people.

He first visited the Tuareg in 1964 and has subsequently written four books and several dozen academic articles on them and related peoples/regions of the Sahara-Sahel. He immediately diagnosed from a previous cervical spine x-ray, that she had advanced spinal cord syndrome. Unfortunately, the findings came critically late. She died two months later.

Eighty-six percent of people with rheumatoid arthritis have the disease in their neck. (cervical spine). “Death by Rheumatoid Arthritis”, lists signs and symptoms of spinal instability, due to advancement of the disease.

Carla Jones is a fresh voice at Echelon Press Publishing. Her non-fiction eBook, Death from Rheumatoid Arthritis, chronicles her mother's medical and personal experience, fighting the disease. After many years living with RA, her mother manifested many unusual physical symptoms. Only one specialist was able to correctly diagnose her with spinal cord syndrome, due to her eroded cervical spine. Sadly, when the diagnosis was revealed, corrective surgery was not a survivable option. The author's mission is to bring awareness to the fact that one can die from complications, due to rheumatoid arthritis. Her story lists signs and symptoms of an instable spinal column, related to the advancement of the disease. Mrs. Jones attended Pinebrook Jr. College and Southeastern University, earning her equivalence of an Associate's Degree in Psychology. The author has worked as a freelance writer for The Morning Call Newspaper, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. While employed there she wrote for the Arts and Entertainment Department, Neighbors Magazine and for Lehigh Valley Woman's Magazine. She has also written for Pennsylvania's, NeighborCare Pharmacy, presently known as Omnicare Pharmacy. Recently, one of her articles for Operation Christmas Child, a non- for profit organization, was published in, "The Country Register". The author resides in Southeastern Pennsylvania where she co-leads a monthly writer's circle. She's actively involved in her church and volunteers as a Media Specialist for, "Operation Christmas Child". The international program spearheaded by the world relief agency, Samaritan's Purse.

Eye opener

Wow this book was such an eye opener.As a RA patient I have not even heard of or even considered going for x- rays on my spine.Im currently suffering from immense pressure in my neck and spine.We definitely need to consult my doctor about this and I'm surprised that my doctor did not mention going for x- rays when I saw him 2 days ago.I have tried the fungus therapy and for the first 6 months of the therapy everything seemed to be going well,however this did not last long.I am currently back with my previous rheumotologist who is putting me back on the methotrexate and revellex.I am currently 25 years old and was diagnosed when I was 18 years. I fully agree that early diagnosis,treatment and consistency with taking the medication is key to overcoming this disease.

A must read for the RA patient and his or her family!

As a sufferer of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its deliberating and unpredictable nature, I can relate to Celia Veno's struggle and her family's many questions about this still quite confusing disease. Carla Jones writes about her mother's brave struggle with RA and its most complicated physical symptoms. Celia's RA resulted in spinal cord syndrome and unfortunately by the time she was diagnosed, surgery was not an option. Carla's message is bring about understanding and awareness of cervical instability in RA patients. It is a must read for the RA patient and his or her family members. A simple x-ray could have given the Veno family an answer and prolonged Celia's life and ended her pain, but without a proper understanding of the symptoms, the patient and their family cannot alert doctors to spinal cord syndrome. Part of the proceeds for this download go to the Arthritis Foundation.

Charles Goodwin is Professor of Applied Linguistics at UCLA. His interests include video analysis of talk-in-interaction; grammar in context; cognition in the lived social world; gesture, gaze, and embodiment as interactively organized social practices; aphasia in discourse; language in the professions; and the ethnography of science. Goodwin has done fieldwork analyzing family interaction in the United States, the work of oceanographers in the Amazon, archaeologists in the United States and Argentina, and the organization of talk, vision, and embodied action in the midst of surgery. As part of the Workplace Project at Xerox PARC, he investigated cognition and talk-in-interaction in ground operations at a major airport. As a member of the Sloan-funded Center for Everyday Lives of Families, he participated in an intensive cross-disciplinary project investigating the daily lives of middle-class, two-wage-earner families in Los Angeles. Excellent

This collection of volumes is very nice. The texts are rich and translated very well; the physical presentation is very appealing also.

Vol. 3 deals mainly with the Golden Elixir and the philosophy of inner alchemy. The Secret of the Golden Flower, although most well-known, is not even the best text in this volume (in my opinion). The first part of the anthology includes a number of provocative stories and texts focused on the same topics. The best are excerpts of Ancestor L� Dongbin, Chang Po-tuan, and Wang Che, founders of the Total Reality (Quanzhen) school of Taoism, which will really get you interested in reading their full works.

I also really enjoyed the inclusion of excerpts of Liu I-Ming, a 18-19th century commentator on the same works.

The transaction of the Golden Flower is very good, truer than Wilhelm/Baynes, as Cleary will explain. Overall I am very thankful for Cleary's work, which is technical and unassuming at all times. These editions of his are excellent. For further reading, consider:

- Understanding Reality
- The Seal of the Unity of the Three
- The Inner Teachings of Taoism

These are said to be three of the most foundational works of inner alchemy.

A note to those interested in whether this book is enlightening or worth reading: it is among the best collections I've ever read, and the suggestions here will surely provide healthy food for thought. If uninitiated, there is no better place to start. I highly recommend reading as soon as possible!

Beautiful binding, Dust cover is a work of art. Hardy book, substantially heavy, durable and worthy of CLEARY'S excellent work.

Scholarly, yet attainable

So many times, a book is either too scholarly requiring a background in the field, or too elemental and not enough depth. The taoist classics translated by Thomas Cleary assist in understanding the wisdom and a jumping off place for personal application. It gives a perspective, knowing that often there is no English equivalent to the Chinese and often, the original manuscript refers to other eastern teachings and can have multiple levels of meaning and understanding. I appreciate that the author/translator allows for this, giving those of us with a language barrier a glimpse of the truths in these ancient works.
