Not what it could be!
By Tony Rush
I won't presume to be critical of such a great copywriter as the author. But my reason for giving the book only 3 stars instead of five is because the entire book could have been so much more.

The latter half of the book are "100 ways to start a sales letter". It ought to be a gold mine. It IS of value, but again, in nearly all of the illustrated "ways", Lewis illustrates how people foul them up; not in how they are used successfully.

The same is true for the first part of the book. He helpfully offers actual samples of sales letters that he has received but spends most of his time mocking them and showing what's wrong. Certainly many of them deserve criticism but I wonder how much better the book would have been if Lewis had given examples of GOOD copy.

I recommend the book. I was just disappointed that it continually focused on the negative instead of helping the reader with GOOD copy.

What are the jobs of the future? How many will there be? And who will have them? We might imagine—and hope—that today’s industrial revolution will unfold like the last: even as some jobs are eliminated, more will be created to deal with the new innovations of a new era. In Rise of the Robots, Silicon Valley entrepreneur Martin Ford argues that this is absolutely not the case. As technology continues to accelerate and machines begin taking care of themselves, fewer people will be necessary. Artificial intelligence is already well on its way to making “good jobs” obsolete: many paralegals, journalists, office workers, and even computer programmers are poised to be replaced by robots and smart software. As progress continues, blue and white collar jobs alike will evaporate, squeezing working- and middle-class families ever further. At the same time, households are under assault from exploding costs, especially from the two major industries—education and health care—that, so far, have not been transformed by information technology. The result could well be massive unemployment and inequality as well as the implosion of the consumer economy itself.

In Rise of the Robots, Ford details what machine intelligence and robotics can accomplish, and implores employers, scholars, and policy makers alike to face the implications. The past solutions to technological disruption, especially more training and education, aren’t going to work, and we must decide, now, whether the future will see broad-based prosperity or catastrophic levels of inequality and economic insecurity. Rise of the Robots is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand what accelerating technology means for their own economic prospects—not to mention those of their children—as well as for society as a whole.

Winner of the 2015 FT & McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award
A New York Times Bestseller
Top Business Book of 2015 at Forbes
One of NBCNews.com 12 Notable Science and Technology Books of 2015

“For nonfiction, I tip my hat to Martin Ford’s Rise of the Robots, which is vacuuming up accolades and is recommended reading for IIF staff. Ford’s analysis, in a somewhat crowded field of similar books, offers a sobering assessment of how technology (robotics, machine learning, AI, etc.) is reshaping labor markets, the composition of growth, and the distribution of income and wealth, and calls for enlightened political and policy leadership to address coming, accelerating disruptions and dislocations.”
—Bloomberg Business, Timothy Adams

““We are in an era of technological optimism but sociological pessimism. Martin Ford’s Rise of the Robots captures why these shifts are related and what challenges this might pose to our conventional economic and social infrastructures.”
—Bloomberg Business, Andy Haldane

“Whether you agree or not with the policy prescriptions put forward by [Martin Ford’s Rise of the Robots and Anne-Marie Slaughter’s Unfinished Business] these two well-written books, and quite a few will likely disagree, they are important reads for those wishing to better understand and influence the future.”
—Bloomberg Business, Mohamed El-Erian

“Few captured the mood as well as Martin Ford in The Rise of the Robots, the winner of the FT and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award, which painted a bleak picture of the upheavals that would come as ever-greater numbers of even highly skilled workers were displaced by machines.”
—Financial Times

“[A] breathtaking new book on modern economics.”
—Forbes.com

“Lucid, comprehensive and unafraid to grapple fairly with those who dispute Ford’s basic thesis, Rise of the Robots is an indispensable contribution to a long-running argument.”
—Los Angeles Times

“If The Second Machine Age was last year’s tech-economy title of choice, this book may be 2015’s equivalent.”
—Financial Times, Summer books 2015, Business, Andrew Hill

“[Ford’s] a careful and thoughtful writer who relies on ample evidence, clear reasoning, and lucid economic analysis. In other words, it’s entirely possible that he’s right.”
—Daily Beast

“Rise of the Robots is an excellent book. Fair-minded, balanced, well-researched, and fully thought through.”
—Inside Higher Ed, Learn blog

“Surveying all the fields now being affected by automation, Ford makes a compelling case that this is an historic disruption—a fundamental shift from most tasks being performed by humans to one where most tasks are done by machines.”
—Fast Company

“Well written with interesting stories about both business and technology.”
—Wired/Dot Physics

“Mr. Ford lucidly sets out myriad examples of how focused applications of versatile machines (coupled with human helpers where necessary) could displace or de-skill many jobs… His answer to a sharp decline in employment is a guaranteed basic income, a safety net that he suggests would both cushion the effect on the newly unemployable and encourage entrepreneurship among those creative enough to make a new way for themselves. This is a drastic prescription for the ills of modern industrialization—ills whose severity and very existence are hotly contested. Rise of the Robots provides a compelling case that they are real, even if its more dire predictions are harder to accept.”
—Wall Street Journal

“Well-researched and disturbingly persuasive.”
—Financial Times

“[Rise of the Robots is]about as scary as the title suggests. It’s not science fiction, but rather a vision (almost) of economic Armageddon.”
—Frank Bruni, New York Times

“As Martin Ford documents in Rise of the Robots, the job-eating maw of technology now threatens even the nimblest and most expensively educated...the human consequences of robotization are already upon us, and skillfully chronicled here."
—New York Times Book Review

“Compelling and well-written… In his conception, the answer is a combination of short-term policies and longer-term initiatives, one of which is a radical idea that may gain some purchase among gloomier techno-profits: a guaranteed income for all citizens. If that stirs up controversy, that's the point. The book is both lucid and bold, and certainly a starting point for robust debate about the future of all workers in an age of advancing robotics and looming artificial intelligence systems.”
—ZDNet

“An alarming new book.”
—Esquire

“A thorough look at how far machines have come”
—Washington Post, Innovations blog

“Ford tells great stories, both about innovation in the last 50 years and about the potential impacts of widespread automation of work in the future…Rise of the Robots is a competent, approachable, and well-written synthesis of information across many area, and provides a valuable, coherent picture of automation’s socio-economic interactions.”
—IEEE Technology and Society Magazine

“Ford offers ideas on changes in social policies, including guaranteed income, to keep our economy humming and prepare ourselves for a more automated future.”
—Booklist

“A careful and courageous examination of automation and its possible impact on society.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“In Rise of the Robots, Ford coolly and clearly considers what work is under threat from automation.”
—New Scientist

“Makes clear the need to come to grips with ever more rapidly advancing technology and its effects on how people make a living and how the economy functions.”
—Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

“Of all the moderns who have written on automation and rising joblessness, Martin Ford is the original. His Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future is due out this May.... Self-recommending.”
—Marginal Revolution

“Robots, and their like, are on the rise. Their impact will be an important question in the next decade and beyond. Martin Ford has been thinking in this area before most others, so this book deserves very careful consideration.”
—Lawrence Summers, President Emeritus and Charles W. Eliot University Professor, Harvard University

“It's not easy to accept, but it's true. Education and hard work will no longer guarantee success for huge numbers of people as technology advances. The time for denial is over. Now it's time to consider solutions and there are very few proposals on the table. Rise of the Robots presents one idea, the basic income model, with clarity and force. No one who cares about the future of human dignity can afford to skip this book.”
—Jaron Lanier, author of You Are Not a Gadget and Who Owns the Future?

“Ever since the Luddites, pessimists have believed that technology would destroy jobs. So far they have been wrong. Martin Ford shows with great clarity why today's automated technology will be much more destructive of jobs than previous technological innovation. This is a book that everyone concerned with the future of work must read.”
—Lord Robert Skidelsky, Emeritus Professor of Political Economy at the University of Warwick, co-author of How Much Is Enough?: Money and the Good Life and author of the three-volume biography of John Maynard Keynes

“Martin Ford has thrust himself into the center of the debate over AI, big data, and the future of the economy with a shrewd look at the forces shaping our lives and work. As an entrepreneur pioneering many of the trends he uncovers, he speaks with special credibility, insight, and verve. Business people, policy makers, and professionals of all sorts should read this book right away—before the 'bots steal their jobs. Ford gives us a roadmap to the future.”
—Kenneth Cukier, Data Editor for the Economist and co-author of Big Data: A Revolution That Will Transform How We Live, Work, and Think

“If the robots are coming for my job (too), then Martin Ford is the person I want on my side, not to fend them off but to construct a better world where we can all—humans and our machines—live more prosperously together. Rise of the Robots goes far beyond the usual fear-mongering punditry to suggest an action plan for a better future.”
—Cathy N. Davidson, Distinguished Professor and Director, The Futures Initiative, The Graduate Center, CUNY and author of Now You See It: How the Brain Science of Attention Will Transform the Way We Live, Work, and Learn

“Martin Ford’s Rise of the Robots is a very important, timely, and well-informed book. Smart machines, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and the “Internet of things” are transforming every sector of the economy. Machines can outperform workers in a rapidly widening arc of activities. Will smart machines lead to a world of plenty, leisure, health care, and education for all; or to a world of inequality, mass unemployment, and a war between the haves and have-nots, and between the machines and the workers left behind? Ford doesn’t claim to have all of the answers, but he asks the right questions and offers a highly informed and panoramic view of the debate. This is an excellent book that offers us a sophisticated glimpse into our possible futures.”
—Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute, Columbia University and author of The Age of Sustainable Development

Incredible book from page 75 on -- An AI Professor's Opinion
By migedy
I have taught Artificial Intelligence (AI) for 3 decades at a major university. Until about 10 years ago, whenever someone worried about the effect of intelligent software/hardware destroying future jobs, I would always give my "buggy whip" argument, which goes like this:

"When the automobile was invented it DID destroy many jobs. Makers of buggy whips and horse troughs were put out of business. But many more NEW jobs were created to replace those older jobs. Witness all the gas stations, auto mechanic shops, car factories, etc."

About 8 years ago I lost faith in the buggy whip argument. I realized that, as the technology of AI advanced, a point would be reached in which intelligent software and general-purpose robots could perform all tasks (both mental and physical) that are currently achievable only by highly educated humans. Once one intelligent robot exists with a high level of general intelligence, it can be mass produced. There have been many advances in AI in recent years (in neural networks, planning and learning systems). Machine learning systems can now learn a number of complex cognitive tasks simply by observing the past performance of human experts.

I have always been an admirer of the combination of modern capitalism and (relatively) free markets as the major drivers of wealth. However, modern capitalism (with its corporations, stock and dividends) is less than a few centuries old. There is no reason to believe that it must last forever. Its "reign" over older economic systems may well end abruptly in the near future.

At one time I toyed with writing a book about my concerns regarding intelligent automation and its future effect on political and economic systems but Martin Ford has a done a 100-times better job that I could have ever done. His book is very persuasive in pointing out why the "buggy whip" argument will cease to remain persuasive.

I only have two complaints about Ford's book: (a) the title sounds a bit too much like a title for a pulp-fiction work and so I fear that not enough people will read it and (b) the first 75 pages consist of a standard summary of current economic facts and principles and so I fear that some readers may quit reading his book before they get to the really interesting parts, which in my opinion, start after page 75.

Must Reading!
By Loyd Eskildson
Economists have long derided early 1800s' Luddite 'lump of labor' belief that there was only a fixed amount of work to be done, and that labor-saving devices would detract from available jobs. Historically, that has been far from the case in the U.S. - advancing technology has steadily brought more prosperity for all. Even the mechanization of American agriculture, despite eliminating millions of jobs, failed to create massive unemployment - millions more new jobs became available in manufacturing. Then came automation and sending jobs to Mexico and the Far East (outsourcing, globalization, offshoring) - those lost jobs were replaced by new service jobs, often offering better wages. Until now.

America's economy is now obviously stuck in a rut, notwithstanding the almost daily reports of new technologies, green products, and purportedly beneficial free trade pacts. In fact, author Ford (and others) tells us we're now realizing this formerly symbiotic relationship between increasing productivity and rising standards of living began weakening in the 1970s. In a 1/2/2010 article, the Washington Post reported that the just completed first decade of the 21st century brought no new jobs, a first since the Great Depression. This 'lost decade' is especially astonishing when one also realizes our economy needs to create about a million jobs/year just to keep up with growth in the size of the workforce. Meanwhile, income inequality has rebounded, reaching levels not seen since 1929

Ford (mistakenly) attributes this new economy entirely to automation, severely underestimating the impact of offshoring. Regardless, automation has also been a major contributor to job losses both in manufacturing and service sectors, and underlying automation's increasingly rapid (geometric) growth - Moore's Law, applied to both computer power and memory. Both areas are seeing a rough doubling in capability every two years - continuing a pace that began about 40 years ago and now bringing unimaginable (scope and pace) change throughout our economy.

We now have experimental self-driving cars, IBM's 'Watson' defeating all-time Jeopardy! champions, innumerable 'ugly teller' ATMs taking the place much more attractive tellers, airplanes can now largely fly themselves, computers interpret some medical images, much legal discovery work now is performed far faster and cheaper with scanners and PC programs, cash registers not only automatically calculate change due - they also input customer-specific data into huge databases, meetings no longer require expensive and time-consuming travel, hardware stores are testing robots as greeters that also help direct customers and are able to immediately tell them if a part they're looking for is in stock, robots are becoming cheaper and much more easily programmable, etc. Thus, wages for new college graduates have been declining in real terms over the past decade and up to half of new graduates are forced to take jobs that don't require a college degree.

Two sectors have resisted automation - education and health care. The latter is slowly moving forward, helped by the accumulation and analyses of massive amounts of data that will slowly unravel a better understanding of 'What works' (many treatments don't help or are even harmful; regardless, many generally helpful treatments don't work for all patient situations), assist providers in accurate diagnoses (IBM's Watson is already training for this role) and providing helpful treatment reminders. Meanwhile, in the higher-education realm, MOOCs have been introduced, found wanting, and are now being improved and formally incorporated into degree/certificate programs. Elementary and high-schools have been the most resistant - however, adaptive learning has been introduced there and is also being steadily improved.

The fastest-growing market for robots is China - installations have grown about 25%/year since 2005, despite its relatively low wage rates. Another likely surprise - the source of much robot innovation. Microsoft's Xbox 360 console (available for $150) uses a webcam-like device that incorporates 3D machine vision capability that allows interaction simply by gesturing and moving within view of its camera. New 'Baxter' robots (about $20,000, can be used for light assembly, transferring parts between conveyers, packing product, tending machining operations) can be trained simply by moving its arms through the required motions - that robot can then send its 'learning' to others.

Standardized software and hardware building blocks have brought an explosion of application software for PCs, iPhones, iPads, Android apps, etc. Ford sees this pattern repeating with robots.

Ford's forecasts, unfortunately, cannot be taken at face value. For example, he sees 're-shoring' (bringing manufacturing jobs back to America) as becoming a major force, thanks to automation. Maybe. But will American robot manufacturing be competitive with Chinese robot manufacturing? If robots will tilt the playing field so much back in our favor, why are auto manufacturing building new plants in Mexico? And his claim that robots will allow siting American manufacturing closer to users ignores that reality of scale economies and the powerful existing transportation economies created by 1.5 mile-long trains transporting cargo containers across the U.S. Some industries will benefit (eg. fashion clothes), others will not.

Low wages and nearly complete lack of benefits have drawn intensive criticism and media coverage for the fast-food industry. Yet, when McDonald's launched a high-profile 2011 initiative to hire 50,000 new workers in a single day, it received over one million applications. Meanwhile, Momentum Machines is working to fully automate production of gourmet-quality hamburgers, believing its device will pay for itself in less than a year. Another potential advantage - improved hygiene as fewer workers would come in contact with the food.

'Retail worker' is another sector with very-high employment numbers. There we already have disruption via online retailers like Amazon and Netflix. Once jobs move to a warehouse they become far easier to automate - eg. Amazon is now placing Kiva robots (small devices that bring specific shelves to workers, rather than having workers walk to shelves) and one Wall Street analyst estimates those robots will allow Amazon to cut fulfillment costs up to 40%. Kroger warehouses are working on an even more sophisticated system eliminating labor used for storing items in its warehouses and preparing pallets for store delivery. Meanwhile, Netflix has driven Blockbuster etc. out of business, and Amazon et al have recently eliminated Borders and Circuit City from the landscape, and eg. movie rental kiosks (eg. Redbox) seem to be an anachronism,.

Ford then continues, considering the impact of robots on agriculture, and more intellectual realms.

The most compelling text yet on automation & it's impact on our future
By Abhas Gupta
I read an early draft of the book and just finished the final version. Automation will be THE defining social and political issue of the next decade. And of all the books, articles, blogs, & interviews I've come across on this topic, Rise of the Robots makes the most compelling case yet. I can't recommend this book strongly enough--thought leaders, technologists, and policymakers, please read this! The sooner we can implement thoughtful, complimentary policies, the sooner we can mitigate the negative impact automation can have on hundreds of millions of workers.

Hitchcock on Hitchcock, Volume 2: Selected Writings and Interviews, by Alfred Hitchcock

This second volume of Alfred Hitchcock’s reflections on his life and work and the art of cinema contains material long out of print, not easily accessible, and in some cases forgotten or unknown. Edited by Sidney Gottlieb, this new collection of interviews, articles with the great director's byline, and “as-told-to” pieces provides an enlivening perspective on a career that spanned seven decades and transformed the history of cinema.

In writings and interviews imbued with the same exuberance and originality that he brought to his films, Hitchcock ranges from accounts of his own life and experiences to provocative comments on filmmaking techniques and cinema in general. Wry, thoughtful, witty, and humorous—as well as brilliantly informative and insightful—this volume contains much valuable material that adds to our understanding and appreciation of a titan who decades after his death remains one of the most renowned and influential of all filmmakers.

Franois Truffaut once said that Hitchcock “had given more thought to the potential of his art than any of his colleagues.” This profound contemplation of his art is superbly captured in the pieces from all periods of Hitchcock’s career gathered in this volume, which reveal fascinating details about how he envisioned and attempted to create a “pure cinema” that was entertaining, commercially successful, and artistically ambitious and innovative in an environment that did not always support this lofty goal.

From the Inside Flap
"Who knew there was so much more intriguing material waiting to be gathered for Volume Two of Hitchcock on Hitchcock? Gottlieb has done a splendid job of searching down and intelligently introducing rare, often surprising items, including Hitchcock's early fiction, missing elements from his published conversations with Truffaut, and several of his little-known, nuanced essays on the craft of film making. Volume Two is a pleasure to read and a gift to anyone interested in the great director's career."—James Naremore, author of An Invention without a Future: Essays on Cinema

"For nearly twenty years, film buffs have been unable to imagine a world without Hitchcock on Hitchcock. Now Sidney Gottlieb has unearthed another volume’s worth of interviews, essays, and occasional pieces by the Master of Suspense, framing, contextualizing, and serving them up with unobtrusive deftness. I suspect that in less than twenty-four hours, readers exploring this gold mine of wisdom, opinion, memoir, anecdotes, and epigrams will be unable to imagine a world without Hitchcock on Hitchcock 2."—Thomas Leitch, coeditor of A Companion to Alfred Hitchcock

Praise for Volume 1:
"The essays, interviews and speeches in this collection make clear that [Hitchcock] enjoyed playing the role of God: in planning and executing his films, he relished the power he exerted as an all-powerful auteur. . . . Hitchcock on Hitchcock provides some telling self-portraits of the director. Almost every piece . . . contains an interesting nugget of technical information, or one or two anecdotal truffles."—Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"Simply having this much out-of-the-way material at one's fingertips makes this a must for Hitchcock scholars.... This us an editing job worthy of the director himself." —Ina Ray Hark, Hitchcock Annual

"This is a book for anyone interested in Hitchcock the man and the—yes—artist; but also for those concerned with the history of British and American cinema, and with how these films, or some of their famous scenes, were made; and, at least intermittently, for those who fancy a good anecdone, a bit of tart humour, some iconoclastic views, and many fine insights into art and life—along with others of a more dubious nature." —John Simon, Times Literary Supplement

About the Author
Sidney Gottlieb is Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. He coedits (with Richard Allen) the Hitchcock Annual, and his books include Hitchcock on Hitchcock: Selected Writings and Interviews, Volume 1; Alfred Hitchcock: Interviews; and Roberto Rossellini’s “Rome Open City.”

INDISPENSABLE
By EPluribusUnum100
Even if you are only slightly interested in Alfred Hitchcock you will find this book enjoyable reading just for the sheer variety of material culled from a 50+ year career. For students of Hitchcock's films this volume is quite indispensable, particularly the HITCHCOCK AT WORK section which includes a 22-page transcription of the director talking with his production manager about shooting STAGE FRIGHT and going over all the logistics of the film even before the screenplay was written. Unfortunately no excerpts from this are presented in Amazon's rather generous selection of preview pages, but have a look at Hitchcock's earliest writings in the preview to see the value of this volume, especially the short "Titles--Artistic and Otherwise" (p 71) or "How a Talking Film is Made" (p.73). The paperback edition I have is printed on sturdy, recycled paper and the binding looks like it will stand up to years of use--which is likely as this is really an indispensable reference book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The Happiness Track: How to Apply the Science of Happiness to Accelerate Your Success, by Emma Seppala

A leading expert on health psychology, well-being, and resilience argues that happiness is the key to fast tracking our professional and personal success.

Everyone wants to be happy and successful. And yet the pursuit of both has never been more elusive. As work and personal demands rise, we try to keep up by juggling everything better, moving faster, and doing more. While we might succeed in the short term, it comes at a cost to our well-being, relationships, and, paradoxically, our productivity. In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala, the science director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University, explains that our inability to achieve sustainable fulfillment is tied to common but outdated notions about success. We are taught that getting ahead means doing everything that’s thrown at us (and then some) with razor-sharp focus and iron discipline; that success depends on our drive and talents; and that achievement cannot happen without stress.

The Happiness Track demolishes these counter-productive theories. Drawing on the latest findings from the fields of cognitive psychology and neuroscience—research on happiness, resilience, willpower, compassion, positive stress, creativity, mindfulness—Seppala shows that finding happiness and fulfillment may, in fact, be the most productive thing we can do to thrive professionally. Filled with practical advice on how to apply these scientific findings to our daily lives, The Happiness Track is a life-changing guide to fast tracking our success and creating the anxiety-free life we want.

In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala
By Reading and Musing
In The Happiness Track, Emma Seppala, (a Ph.D. from Stanford) notes that in today's society, we strive for happiness and success, but often find both unattainable. We learn that in order to be happy, we need to be successful.

We grow up believing that we need to find a passion at a young age, focus solely on this passion, and work ourselves to the bone so that we can become masters in this field. We tell ourselves that the stress, anxiety and exhaustion that we feel as the result of our work-horse mentality, only means that we're on the right track.

But Seppala argues that the reverse is true -- that in order to be successful, we need to be happy. In order to be happy, we need to take care of ourselves; focusing on our mental well-being, taking necessary work breaks, and remaining mindful and present throughout our every day lives.

Through scientific studies, anecdotal notes, and interviews, Seppala explains just how happiness lends itself fully to success, and provides concrete methods for improving our personal day-to-day happiness factors.

My colleague loves mindful meditation. He gave me this book as a result of multiple conversations about this practice, and while this book is unlike any that I would normally choose for myself, I truly enjoyed it.

The chapters (and my thoughts on each) are as follows:

1 - Stop Chasing the Future. Seppala notes that we're taught to always be looking forward. We're never able to appreciate our achievements, because as soon as we come close to reaching our goal, we're already looking to make progress on the next goal. We miss out on the good things happening around us now.

She's right. The timelines and deadlines I've arranged for myself throughout the years are innumerable. I'm organized and I like structure, so I set goals, and deadlines in all facets of my life. As soon as I finish one thing, I have ten other tasks lined up. I never feel fully at ease in my day, because I'm always looking to make headway in endeavors I haven't yet reached. It's stressful, and I'm always tired. It's no way to live.

2 - Step Out of Overdrive. Seppala states that we need to slow down. The United States is one of the most stressed out privileged nations in the world. Our anxiety costs us billions of dollars per year. 70% of mental health doctors' visits are due to anxiety and stress. This is unfortunate, but it's not any one person's fault. It's the result of a society that values competition and around-the-clock work over our health and mental well-being.

I make jokes all the time about other people contaminating me with their "contagious" stress. Turns out though -- I'm right! When you're stressed, or anxious, your pheromones project this into the air. Others can literally catch your stress. No wonder Americans suffer from such significant mental health issues! And yet, we stigmatize those who reach out for help with a callous "Buck up. It's not that bad." No. Don't "buck up." Get help. You should feel welcome to take care of yourself without judgment. Our attitudes are conflicting and nonsensical.

Our unhealthy need for competition, and desire to always be "on" leads to absurd amounts of multi-tasking. Because we spend so much time multi-tasking, we make mistakes, and never fully commit to the task at hand. By slowing down, we'll not only make less mistakes in the work we do, but we'll enjoy each task more, and feel less aggravation and stress.

3 - Manage Your Energy. Only put your energy toward things that really matter. If the task doesn't require all of your energy, then don't give it all of your energy. Save your high intensity emotions for things that require high intensity.

4 - Get More Done by Doing More of Nothing. I found this chapter so interesting. Seppala discussed how some of the most influential and innovative people of our time came up with their life-changing ideas. Guess where their bouts of genius didn't occur? At work. In their email. In a staff meeting. Sure -- these people worked hard, and tended to their emails, but they also took time out for themselves. They golfed. They fished. They took vacations. In doing these things, in giving their minds rest, they were able to recharge and rejuvenate. Then, because their brains were awake and fully functioning, they were able to tap into their creativity, and create world-altering inventions. It makes sense.

5 - Enjoy a Successful Relationship With Yourself. Be nice to yourself. We live in a society that demands perfection -- and we're horrible to ourselves when we don't achieve it.

Think about how terrible you feel when someone constantly belittles you. Isn't it awful? So then, why constantly belittle yourself? It's not helpful. Accept your mistakes and your shortcomings, and move on.

Also, allow yourself to indulge in activities that do not play to your strengths. If you're not willing to try anything outside of your comfort zone, you're stifling your creativity.

We've created a society in which failure isn't an option. People are afraid to try new things, or to take risks. Because of this, we don't even know what amazing inventions or ideas we could be missing out on. I'm not preaching at you -- to my own detriment, my least favorite thing in the world is to fail.

6 - Understand the Kindness Edge. This was another of my favorite chapters. As we grow through life, we're taught "Look out for yourself. No one else will. Do what you need to do to get ahead. Don't worry about those you need to trample on your climb to the top."

People who follow this mindset often find themselves burned out and alone. Their learned narcissism slowly starts to make them insane. The result of this is an intense unhappiness, and often a mental breakdown.

Leaders, managers, and bosses who are kind, who take the time to listen, who worry about their employees' success, find their own success. Their employees are loyal to them, and work hard for them. Because their employees are happier to do their jobs, their work often yield incredible results.

Success is the result of kindness. I'm lucky -- because I work for this type of person. Unfortunately - he's the first boss I've had who practices this methodology.

Seppala also introduced different ways to achieve a sense of calm. She discussed different mindful meditation practices, yoga courses, art classes, breathing exercises, and nature retreats.

As someone who is anxious, busy, and feeling "behind" much of the time, this book truly resonated with me. I took from it many different activities that I plan to incorporate into my day-to-day in order to increase my daily happiness factor.

However, while I love the idea of practicing happiness and mindfulness, my concern is -- unless everyone is practicing such, will it really be possible to drive any truly positive change? For example, if you work for a boss who values overtime work, will you get fired if you say, "Nah. I'm taking today off."? I'm not sure.

Either way -- I highly recommend reading this book. For the rest of my reviews, go to readingandmusing.com

Excellent! One of the Best! Here’s my Summary and Review-
By Amp Van Zandt
This book shows you how happiness and productivity go hand in hand. It is broken up into 6 decent sized but not overwhelmingly long chapters. The author makes her case by showing how new research (and also some old research) has overturned myths about productivity and success. Here are a few samples of the myths she confronts-

Myth 1: You must work nonstop, in an all work no play life in order to be successful. The author refers to this as being in “overdrive”. In its place she gives the evidence that shows how taking breaks, having hobbies, and other forms of relaxation increase your productivity in the long haul.

Myth 2: In order to succeed, you must be your own worst critic. This myth serves as a backdrop against chapter 5, where the author makes the case for self-compassion as a profound tool to get more done, be happier, and even live longer.

These are good examples of the overall theme of the book- you don’t have to kill yourself and be miserable today, in order to be happy tomorrow or to fulfill your dreams. That living a life that makes you happy in the present can also lead to greater productivity and long-term success is a bold claim, but the case is made with such strength you have to accept it. This is one of the most thoroughly documented and research based self-help books I’ve ever read. After the final chapter, the next 30 pages are lists of all the research, interviews, and other academic books she cites for each of the 6 chapters. For this, and for the fact that this is a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening read, I just have to give this book my highest recommendations. I’ve been studying success and productivity systems for 20 years, and this book is top of the line. It has really helped round out my perspective and knowledge about getting ahead in life.

A great practical resource for the over-driven and exhausted
By M.M.
This book is extremely well-written. Dr. Seppala successfully hits the mark on all three criteria of a timeless self-help book, namely (a) clear and easy to read, (b) containing practical, easy to follow advice (e.g., how powerful a wellness tool something as simple as deep, slow breathing can be), and (c) solid scientific evidence to back up all the advice. What makes this book truly remarkable is how Dr. Seppala packs in a treasure trove rigorous research while keeping the text consistently accessible and readable.

As an over-driven individual in a high pressure work environment, I go through cycles of really high energy, engagement in work, and productivity followed by cycles of collapse. Chapter 3, 'Managing Your Energy', has been extremely helpful to me in understanding why: apparently positive high intensity emotions such as enthusiasm have the same exhausting physiological impact as high intensity negative emotions like anger, so while high energy positive emotions are essential to happiness when they occur in small doses, chronic indulgence in them (something American society and professional cultures encourage and reward) is damaging to health. Chapter 3 has motivated me to very seriously rethink how I should manage my enthusiasm and engagement, traits I have always seen as unambiguously positive even though they contribute to regular periodic collapse. A second lesson in energy management the books discusses is the concept of 'satisficing', i.e., to maximize long-term happiness and productivity, one has to be judicious about which tasks to devote one's best effort to vs. which ones to hold back on and be just good enough. While I have known this conceptually, it was only after reading this book make a science-based case for it that I was able to hold back and do a merely good-enough job on a work project, something I have never been able to do before.

Another message that I implemented immediately in my life after reading the book is that of self-compassion. I was being asked to take on a project at work that was challenging to an unhealthy degree. I see myself as someone who, to my detriment, never backs away from a challenge, no matter how impossible. The emphasis on self-care and self-compassion in the book helped me listen to my intuition that the project was going to be injuriously stressful, and explain to my management very constructively but honestly what I needed to make the project realistic, and lo and behold, my management agreed!

A surprsingly (?) good book!
By Joe Jazz
When I received this book, at first glance, I was disappointed--the exercises seemed so...simple. But I gave it a try, and found that, a lot of those exercise were hard for me to play. So, with a little faith, I dived in deeper, and went through the whole book over the course of around a week. I have, so far, found it to be a very enlightening and practical guide, to help me find areas I am weak in, and to help me improve. It's not about "music"--it's just about technique. E.g., can you play a note on the g-string with your left middle-finger, plucking with your right index-finger, and then play a note on the d-string with your ring-finger and pluck with the left finger. Sounds easy, but, for me at least, it's not always the case.

I think this is a "two-hand" exercise book. The author doesn't go into hardly any detail about technique--he just lays out the exercises. I recommend doing all the exercises starting with the left then right plucking finger.

Getting Old.
By Amazon Customer
As a bass player for 35 years, my fingers have definitely become arthritic to some degree. The exercises help with that- especially if you play an extended range bass or upright where the stretches are particularly long.

Killer!!
By Slap Da Beass
This book is killer! The biggest hurdle to get over when first learning to play the bass or any stringed instrument is building the hand strength and muscle memory for the chord changes and scales. This book is the best way to build these muscles. It's a great book. Perfect for any player on any level. You really can feel and see immediate results. You won't be disappointed!
