A postmodern classic

Far too long out of print, TARZAN ALIVE: THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY OF LORD GREYSTOKE is a postmodern classic that will appeal to readers of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Philip Jos� Farmer, as well as those interested in parascholarship, fictional biographies, and literature in general. This is the book that launched the concept of the Wold Newton family, the genetic lineage exposed to a radioactive meteorite in 1795, thus spawning a number of great detectives, scientists, explorers, and adventurers, some of whom border on the superhuman. Farmer's addenda, expanding this concept to include a multitude of literary characters (such as those from Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and Jack London's THE SEA WOLF, to name only a couple), alone make the cost of this book worth it.

This is truly the definitive edition of TARZAN ALIVE, and Bison Books has wisely added a number of extras that will make this edition worth owning even if one already has a Doubleday, Popular Library, or Playboy Paperbacks copy of the book. Collected here, but missing from the older versions of the book, are two gems: 1) "Extracts from the Memoirs of 'Lord Greystoke' (previously only available in the hard-to-find anthology MOTHER WAS A LOVELY BEAST); and 2) "Tarzan Lives: An Exclusive Interview with the Eighth Duke of Greystoke" (in which Farmer himself interviews the Jungle Lord). Further, the Bison Books edition includes an insightful new foreword by Win Scott Eckert (editor of MYTHS FOR THE MODERN AGE: PHILIP JOS� FARMER'S WOLD NEWTON UNIVERSE), which places TARZAN ALIVE in the context of "Sherlockian biographical scholarship," showing how Farmer's book is truly exemplary (and also transcendent) in the field of fictional biography. This is followed by a new introduction by science fiction author Mike Resnick discussing Farmer's other Tarzan pastiches.

The book itself is a compelling read. Farmer treats the subject of his "biography" as a living person about whom Edgar Rice Burroughs chronicled in fictionalized form. This livens up what otherwise would be a dry summary of ERB's Tarzan series, as Farmer often interjects with persuasive comments, conjectures, and elaborations in the brilliant style that is unique to him. In TARZAN ALIVE, Farmer breathes new life into the legend of Tarzan, all out of a respectful love for the character which pours from every word on every page of this delightfully wonderful work.

The Lowdown on the Earl of Greystoke

The author once indicated that the title was imposed upon him, but outside of the title, the book is thoroughly enjoyable. As with "Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street," this book is a biography of the title character.
In Farmer's case, he had to explain, among other things, how the young Tarzan learned how to speak, when the known great apes don't. Reconciling the history of Tarzan with what was known then, and at the time of the book's writing, was an exercise that took a lot of time and effort, and Mr. Farmer was up to the task.
A family tree, linking Tarzan to other famous literary figures, is included.

Real Man's Biogrpahy

Bison Books has become one of my favorite publishing houses. They have taken upon themselves the almost thankless task of republishing the out of print classics-and I might add, the out of print essentials-of science fiction.

This new edition of "Tarzan Alive" is already a treasured possession. In addition to having the original text, they have included some of Philip Jose Farmer's extras, such as the text of his interview with Lord Greystoke and his worship's memories. We can, therefore, call this the "Director's Cut" edition.

By the way, the cover art takes the cake! I has to be my favorite image of Lord Greystoke!

For the uninitiated, "Tarzan Alive" is a faux-biography of Burroughs's famous ape man. What makes this book interesting is Farmer's extensive research: take a look at the Greystoke coat of arms-you get a feel for Farmer's desire to make Tarzan as real as possible. Another gem is Farmer's assertion that the apes were really a form of Australopitheci. This makes more sense, in as much as the apes have their on language, Mangani.

Although the book asserts that it is reprint "in its entirety" (p. vii), there is one omission. In the hardback editions, Farmer had included a genealogical table of Tarzan, and his many famous relatives, such as Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, and Doc Savage. Admittedly, in many of the later paperback editions this family tree was also omitted; however, I would have preferred it to be included.

For the curious, any good "World Newton Family" web page will have a copy of this key chart.

With that one let-down, I recommend this book for fans of the Ape Man, or anyone into the Victorian Classics or the retro Steam Punk novels. Hopefully with the success of this book, Bison will publish its companion volume "Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life," and include the revised family tree.

In 1997, an amateurish group of thieves pulled off the second-largest cash heist in America's history. Their antics conjure up comparisons to novels by Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiassen, but even those authors could not invent such wacky behavior. Although the actual perpetrator, Loomis Fargo driver David Ghantt, was captured on tape as he methodically wheeled money from the vault into a van for a whole hour, it took several days to determine that he had stolen 17 million. The company had to chisel its way inside the vault, as Ghantt had set its security timer so it couldn't be opened for days. Unhappy with his life and marriage, Ghantt had been coaxed into a life of crime by Kelly Campbell, a former Loomis Fargo co-worker. Ghantt honestly believed that he could flee to Mexico and await Campbell, who would join him there with the rest of his share of the stolen money. After depositing the loot with other accomplices, Campbell and Ghantt drove to Columbia, South Carolina, so Ghantt could catch a plane to Mexico. En route to the airport, the couple converted a pair of pantyhose into a temporary money belt so Ghantt could hide his 25,000 in cash. Apparently unaware of the need to plan an escape completely, the couple arrived at the airport only to learn that it was closed for the night. A flustered Ghantt then took a four-hour cab ride to the Atlanta airport, which eventually led him to Mexico. Meanwhile, back at home, the bungling continued. The thieves were forced to leave 3.3 million behind because they didn't bring enough 55-gallon storage drums. Two days later, gang member Michele Chambers walked into a bank with a suitcase full of money and asked how much she could deposit without the bank's having to file a report. She deposited 9,500, but a report of suspicious activity was filed anyway. It would take several months for that report to wind its way through the bureaucracy. Back at their mobile home, Michele and her husband, Steve, the mastermind of this strange gang, decided to purchase a 635,000 home less than 30 miles from their current abode. To furnish their new home, the Chamberses went on a spending spree that included a six-foot-tall wooden Indian, a large oil painting of dogs in military clothes, two bronze statues of nude men, a white porcelain statue of three nude women, a sculpture of a headless man, a ceramic white elephant, gold-framed oil paintings of zebras, naked-women bookends, and a statue of a fat chef. The couple replaced the raw-silk stair runner on the home's impressive staircase with a snappier tiger-skin look. They also bought several large-screen televisions, a 10,000 pool table, a grand piano that no one in the home could play, and several tanning beds. And it wasn't just Michele and Steve who spent extravagantly. Steve was paying friends and relatives to hide portions of the loot. The various members of the gang purchased 15 vehicles, including a BMW Z-3 roadster convertible, pickup trucks, minivans, two boats, and six motorcycles. These new millionaires also felt a need to look rich. Steve gave Michele a 43,000 diamond ring and a Rolex watch. Three relatives of one thief used heist money to pay for breasts implants. Kelly Campbell looked into having liposuction for her buttocks. Meanwhile, down in Mexico, David Ghantt was repeatedly calling for more money. He soon learned that Steve Chambers had paid someone to kill him, so the man who actually stole the money spent most of his time alone in his hotel room, eating M&M's, listening to the Eagles, smoking Marlboro Lights, and reading comic books. When the authorities finally found him, Ghantt gratefully said, "Please tell me you're an FBI agent." Four years after the heist, the FBI had arrested and convicted 24 people and located or accounted for 95 percent of the money, but the folklore surrounding the gang that couldn't steal straight lingers. In this book, Jeff Diamant uses his inside knowledge as lead reporter on the story for the Charlotte Observer to fill in all the hilarious details of a story that has been featured on ABC's 20/20 , America's Most Wanted, "America's Dumbest Criminals", and Discovery Channel's "The Unperfect Crime."

Intriguing case, deserves better from the author

I was familiar with the case, which led me to Jeff Diamant's HEIST. Having worked in criminal justice, with a journalist as my best friend, perhaps my expectations were too high... I just think the author could have done so much more with the book.

A Yale-educated journalist with major newspaper experience should have taken better care in prepping his manuscript for publication.

Do not misunderstand me, I still do recommend the book, I only caution readers of the true crime genre not to expect too much. The read is still worthwhile, still informative and entertaining. Worth a read, just not at cover price.

Absolutely outstanding book -- could not put it down

This is an absolutely outstanding book. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. The book chronicles a down-and-out guy with nothing to lose who attempts the second largest cash heist ever. The author does a terrific job of telling both the criminal and human sides of the story. While painting a vivid picture of the crime, its mechanics, and the ensuing police investigation, one also gets a good feel for the people involved, what their lives were like, and how they came to be part of the heist. Really, an outstanding book, even for folks who generally don't read books very often.

Great analysis

I am a FIDE Master and the more I use this book the more impressed I am with it. I have already used two of the recommendations in competition and I am very pleased. This book gets so much study time I took it out and had it spiral bound!!

Upon further study I found some problems with the calculations in this book. For instance, in chapter 9 Negi claims an advantage for white by ignoring Black's best move in crucial spots. Page 146 13...f6
Page 147 after 15.Ne2 is just equal
Page 151 he considers both 14...g6 and h6 but not f6! Both stockfish and Houdini rate 0.00
On the whole white gets nothing with these recommendations against 7...a6

Contributors include Takuma Nakahira and Daido Moriyama, in whose landmark late-60s magazine Provoke a radically new direction in Japanese photography was set; Nobuyoshi Araki, the provocative and prolific chronicler of bound girls (among other subjects); and Eikoh Hosoe, whose collaborations with the Butoh dance master Hijikata and the novelist Mishima made him prominent as an intellectual figure as well as a photographer. In addition, there are selections from modern masters such as Masahisa Fukase, Takashi Homma, Takuma Nakahira and Hiroshi Sugimoto. Each chapter in the book is devoted to a central theme that is particular to Japanese photography, such as the role of nostalgia in a culture that has often sought to jettison its past amid the shadows of a war lost. The writings vary in form from diary entry to scholarly treatise, but all reflect a clear connection between word and image, one so essential that no comprehensive consideration of Japanese photography can be complete without it.

The 30 pieces collected here range in tone from polemical and philosophical to slyly humorous, and the authors' personal revelations are often disarmingly intimate. There is plenty here to hold the reader's attention: Eikoh Hosoe's behind-the-scenes description of his notorious images of the writer Yukio Mishima; Seiichi Furuya's harrowing account of his wife's suicide; Nobuyoshi Araki's comical notes on an erotically charged photo session; Miyako Ishiuchi's feminist-inflected musings on the interactive nature of looking. The volume could have been made more attractive with a larger number of reproduced images, as the dearth of photographs can be frustrating at times; many of these essays were written as companion pieces to photographic work. The texts are ably introduced by monolithic photography curator Anne Wilkes Tucker, whose History of Japanese Photography is regarded as the best single-volume overview of the subject. Offering reliable insight into little-known aspects of a vibrant photographic culture, this collection will be more deeply enjoyed by those already familiar with Japanese photography.

Great read.

This is part of a summer reading for my graduate program. Setting Sun is a beautiful look inside many of the most famous and influential Japanese photographers. Many are still in process as they think through their use of the frame. I wasn't prepared for how heavily the fall of feudalism and the impact of the atomic bomb affected Japan and its artists. As an american, I had never truly considered the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is a must read for photographers.

Wanda Petronski lives way up in shabby Boggins Heights, and she doesn't have any friends. Every day she wears a faded blue dress, which wouldn't be too much of a problem if she didn't tell her schoolmates that she had a hundred dresses at home--all silk, all colors, and velvet, too. This lie--albeit understandable in light of her dress-obsessed circle--precipitates peals of laughter from her peers, and she never hears the end of it. One day, after Wanda has been absent from school for a few days, the teacher receives a note from Wanda's father, a Polish immigrant: "Dear teacher: My Wanda will not come to your school any more. Jake also. Now we move away to big city. No more holler Polack. No more ask why funny name. Plenty of funny names in the big city. Yours truly, Jan Petronski."

Maddie, a girl who had stood by while Wanda was taunted about her dresses, feels sick inside: "True, she had not enjoyed listening to Peggy ask Wanda how many dresses she had in her closet, but she had said nothing.... About the Author

Eleanor Estes (1906-1988) grew up in West Haven, Connecticut, which she renamed Cranbury for her classic stories about the Moffat and Pye families. A children’s librarian for many years, she launched her writing career with the publication of The Moffats in 1941. Two of her outstanding books about the Moffats—Rufus M. and The Middle Moffat—were awarded Newbery Honors, as was her short novel The Hundred Dresses. She won the Newbery Medal for Ginger Pye.

An important message about bullying

This book was recommended by a pediatrician as one he reads his children each year during the holidays. Though the book was written in the 1940s, the message of standing up against bullying resonates well in today's environment. My eight-year-old granddaughter was enthralled. My five-year-old granddaughter stayed with us through most of the story. I was in tears as I read. I can see us reading The Hundred Dresses every year.

Must Read for All-Truly Timeless Topic about Bullying and Forgiveness

As a teacher, I recommend this book to boys and girls alike. I hold it up to the class and tell them I will read a little bit of it to them. As always, the boys say "Yuck!" or cringe. Everyone thinks this is a story about a fashion show judging by its cover. Next, I tell them it's about bullying. Then, they all stop and stare. By the time I finish reading the first chapter, and I tell them we have to go on to the next lesson, ALL of the students are begging me to continue reading! Even the boys! I do have to note, however, that there are some things in it that may need to be explained since it was written so long ago (1940's). For example, I usually have to explain about the significance of the snide remark from a student/narrator made about Wanda having mud on her shoes. She comes from the "poor side of town" where the streets aren't paved and has to walk to school everyday; there isn't a school bus to take her to school. Or explain the reason why Wanda's dress isn't properly ironed (no mother to show her how to do it). But please do NOT let that keep you from purchasing it! It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn about the "culture" of the times! Students are enthralled by learning about those times through these discussions and love to compare and contrast it with their lives! I noticed some reviews said it was boring but parents and teachers might have missed the opportunity to have a wonderful discussion as I mentioned above. Most importantly, we discuss how the importance of Forgiveness is mentioned in the book not just the bullying.

How It Feels to be Made Fun Of

It is obvious that Wanda Petronski is poor. She wears the same faded blue dress to school every day. EVERY day. Her behavior is unusual and she doesn't have much to say, and when she does she's laughed at. Most of the children might not have noticed her so much had it not been for Peggy and Maddie who make a teasing "game" out of Wanda being so poor AND showing it.. Find out how this causes Wanda to be laughed at so much that she has to move away. It's a sad story, but one that's hard to put down. It will make you think of your own feelings about others that are poorer than you, or just different from you.

One of the best books ever!

This book has got to be one of the best photographic costume history books ever! Snatch this one while you can!
The section on Charles James is alone worth it, since it is next to impossible to find great photos of his work.
I wish more Costume history books were like this with actual full color photos. And the photos are big, not tiny stamp-sized images that make your head hurt.
If you're like me, you hate to invest money to get a book filled with crappy line drawings.
This is what I want in a fashion book. The actual photos are in full color, with front and back shots.

FABulous--Get it before it's out of print

If you never had a chance to visit the Brooklyn Museum during one of their fashion exhibits (I made the epic journey there twice, only to find the FASHION exhibits closed for one reason or another) or you missed out on their book, "Worth, Pingat and Doucet", this book's for you.

The author doesn't just recite the garment details, she talks about the designers shown here, long forgotten as well as the better known. Valentina is here, for instance. Examples from Charles James that I had not seen before. Many others! Not a few of these garments came from well known socialites. Lavish full length studies in glorious color. For me, it was worth both the expense and the wait to get this. Wonderful examples shown, something for everyone! Details you can SEE. By the way, some of the garments seen here have had pattern graphs taken from them in Blanche Payne's "History of Costume", the older edition.

Sadly, the Brooklyn Museum simply doesn't have the resources to keep these clothes or mount any exhibits. This explains why there was nothing to see when I went in the past. Rather like Snowshill Manor's excellent collection (some of which were graphed by J. Arnold); the clothing has now moved elsewhere and seen seldom. Barnard Castle in Britain was another museum that auctioned their costume collection off completely.

Having said that, the Brooklyn Museum is a fine one with many other treasures to see, should you make the journey. Buy the book now, before it's out of print and you have to mortgage your house to buy a copy.

Vintage couture at it's very best

If you are seeking a vintage couture resource that is complete, informative, with great photos, this would be the one for you. It is similar in feeling to the Kyoto Costume Institute book with fantastic photos and descriptions of the best of the best. I managed to see both the Brooklyn Musuem Exhibit AND the Metropolitan Museum exhibit in one weekend. These were some of the most amazing garments that one will be able to see. Most will agree that the Brooklyn Museum exhibit was laid out better and easier to see than the Met's, but they did make a nice sister exhibit. Most of the garments here are from the Brooklyn Museum with a few add ins from the collection and a few deletions from the original exhibit. But for the most part, it is pretty complete. This is a great tool for the vintage couture collector and quite an education on most of the leading designers and a few that have long become forgotten, especially the American Designers. That is the most interesting part. The Women American designers were quite informative including Eta Hentz, Bonnie Cashin, and of course, Clare McCardell. The Worth and the Charles James collections are some of the finest and perfect examples of their couture that is in existence today. That alone makes it worth purchasing this resource.
The Book is not too big and not too small. The price is right and the glossy photos and finish of the book is amazing. I recommend this book highly!
