not very good, in my opinion

So, while this book might work for the introduction of a haiku unit in class, it's just...not very good, in my opinion. Little haikus are presented about various animals, and readers are challenged to figure out what the animal is. They're simple and easy to get, which is fine, but they don't have a very poetic feel, to me. They're just riddles, done in 17 syllables. I don't expect a profound book here, but there's much better work that can be done for a child's book about haiku.

As an alternative, I recommend "Wabi Sabi" by Mark Reibstein. Not only are the haiku a bit more solid, but there's an actual plot to the book, and a far more interesting art style. Remember, just because they're kids doesn't mean they need something simplistic. You can allow some complexity and artistic style to their entertainments.

In Guess Who, Haiku (2016) by Deanna Caswell and Bob Shea team up to create a really unique picture book.

Caswell plays with the Japanese poetic form of haiku to create several riddle type poems asking readers to guess which animal is being described including a cow, a bee, a horse, a bird, a frog, a fish, a mouse, a cat, and a dog. The poems work together to move the book along to different animals until the big finish where children are the subject of the final poem.

Bob Shea's exuberant illustration style works well here to create bold pictures for the reveal of each animal. The design of the book also lends a zany bit of charm to this humorous title that reads a bit like a game show adventure.

The book finishes with an explanation of how haiku's are written and a bit more about the form from Caswell. Large illustrations and a unique (smaller and more square) trim size make this an eye-catching book with lots of appeal.

After reading Guess Who, Haiku the only question is why we have not received the gift of a haiku picture book earlier. Make up for lost time and be sure to check this one out as soon as you can!

Completely Engaging

Haiku poetry is turned into a guessing game in this delightful picture book. One animal after another is described in haiku format and then the reader is asked to guess what animal it is. The answer is revealed with a turn of the page. This simple idea is engaging for youngsters learning about poetry and also works as a more basic picture book for younger listeners. It is that ease of use that makes this book so engaging for various age levels.

Caswell’s haiku are exceptional in the way they offer clues that children can understand and yet conform to the strict haiku format rules. They also read as haiku and real poems, each one working as a stand-alone haiku as well as a clue in the game of the book. This takes real skill, particularly since it looks so very effortless on the page.

Shea’s illustrations are loud, dynamic and funny. From the almost round bumblebee and the grinning flower to the googly-eyed frog , they are simple and also capture the essence of the animal they are depicting. They are filled with energy and life, making the book all the more fun.

This is the ideal book to introduce children to haiku since it makes the experience completely engaging and game-like. Appropriate for ages 3-7.

About the Author
Kim Campbell is the daughter-in-law of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, considered by many as the “science father” of the rapidly growing plant-based nutrition movement. She works with her husband, Nelson, in a health and wellness business promoting a whole-food, plant-based diet. This experience has allowed her to hone her culinary skills, especially in understanding how to create flavors, textures, and presentations that appeal to mainstream consumers experiencing a plant-based diet for the first time. Kim holds a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in Human Service Studies, with a minor in Nutrition and Child Development.

The Results are Worth the Work

Since I have a PhD in Holistic Nutrition and Campell's Dad's text "China Study" was a textbook in the program, I'm very familiar with the work that these recipes are based on. At the time I was studying I always thought "someone should make a Cookbook of recipes for this way of eating!"
The recipes here are an excellent foundation to follow and to build on if you don't know where to start.. and DO start eating this way, it helped me conquer Lymes disease, something very difficult to eradicate once you contract it.

It may seem a bit of a pain to learn and then commit the time to do this. Let me motivate you: not only will you begin to feel and look younger (after you detox all the crap you've built up over time) NO ONE will ever be able to guess your age correctly! I'm well over 60 and people always guess me to be 49 or 50. Better yet, I feel even younger than that. Best of all I'm flexible, vibrant and happy. Not bad for someone plagued with years of depression before I started eating like this. You are what you eat, more clearly... What you eat will determine who/how you will BE.

This was exactly what I was searching for! I have a ton of vegan books but a lot of the recipes are super fatty. This book provides really tasty and exciting recipes without the use of oils. Definitely recommended.

Affordable PlantPure Recipes Prepared with Ease & Simplicity - Yet, Power-packed with PlantPure Flavor and Variety.

Per usual the Campbell Family, et. al. are in fine form encouraging the world to "Eat Plants". Kim's cookbook companion to the soon to be released "PlantPure Nation" film documentary is a wonderful compliment to the growing arsenal of Plant-Based WholeFoodist cookbooks coming to the forefront. (Another of my personal favorites are the two 'China Study' cookbooks from Kim's sister-in-law LeAnne Campbell.)

I absolutely LOVE the full color photographs accompanying each recipe to show you that eating plantpure is a tasty, flavorful, eye-appealing endeavor -- very much contrary to the belief that somehow eating plants won't taste good, or usually looks like 'cardboard' or 'wall-paper paste'. The colors and international variety of 'comfort food' recipes, show the cornucopia of plant-based whole-foods available to those who want to eat plantpure. 'Kim's Hints' mentioned with select recipes help the home cook embrace their kitchen with ease and simplicity. Her recipes are filled with plant ingredients that are readily available and affordable for any newbie plantpure cook, as well as, easy to prepare plantbased substitutions for disease promoting animal-derived products. Her Tofu-Cashew Mayonnaise is a staple in my pantry and a base foundation for many wonderful oil-free dressings & sauces. Cooking for a PlantPure Family is not so expensive, difficult or scary after-all!

Personally, we cut our food bill in half after transitioning to a plantpure lifestyle and Kim's recipes are a wonderful addition for any struggling plant-hungry family. This was the only book i could find on the land cruiser lj70 2.4TD, it has som very good descriptions of the engine and engine related parts, but i found it seriously lacking in the electronics department. There are som good diagrams, but no pictures, or descriptions of the electronics.

For the novice to intermediate-level hobbyist like me, this book is a great resource! Toyota USA can't provide this kind of details, and getting stuff from Toyota Australia is very hard. I don't think it'll be as detailed as the Toyota factory manual, but I'll be happy with it for now.
It has a lot of drawings, pictures, and step-by-step instructions on how to do things yourself, or at least know how to avoid being swindled by mechanics not worth their title/profession.

A must for anyone that follows British Snooker or Ronnie O'Sullivan

Interesting read for anyone following British Snooker. Ronnie O'Sullivan has been the bad boy of British Snooker for over 20 years. He has made more century breaks (100 points without a miss) in competition than any other player living or dead and holds the record for maximum breaks (perfect games of 147 points) in competition at 13. Ronnie is a complicated, intelligent and often troubled individual but yet comes across very likable. His second greatest love in life, other than his two adorable children, is running and the book is often more about his running addiction that snooker but snooker fans won't get a short shrift has he has plenty of detailed information about the inside story of professional snooker. I found the book a very enjoyable quick read, having been a snooker and Ronnie fan for several years. There is a wealth of high quality videos of Ronnie playing on YouTube including all his maximums, especially his fastest ever maximum of 5 minutes 20 seconds in 1997 when he was 21. A record that will likely never be matched or beaten. Ronnie doesn't leave anything out, the drugs, the temper tantrums, the depression are all here.

Great read. I am a huge fan of Ronnie O'Sullivan so it's no surprise I like this book, however it is worth reading even if you know nothing about Ronnie O'Sullivan. To read how one man can overcome many obstacles to become what some people call the most naturally gifted snooker player of all time is truly remarkable. Thanks for writing this book Mr. O'Sullivan.

This book talks about his running, which I didn't know he started as early as he did, but for the most part, but this book seems to be him wanting to clear the air regarding all the tabloid trash that has been talked about him the last several years. "Ronnie did this, Ronnie did that." So Ronnie writes this book to say "Well this is what really happened here, and here's what I was thinking there." It's interesting enough to fill in some gaps if you're the type who reads the papers. I am a Ronnie "fan", but I suppose the term should be "Talent appreciator". I didn't really gain any insights to greatness or glean any secret recipe to what makes a genuis rise above. Darn. I am at the point in life now where I am no longer interested in what my "heroes" do in their own time or in their own heads. If I like watching Ronnie, I'll watch him, if I like so and so's music, I'll listen to it. Beyond that, it's none of my business and just slows my life down trying to follow someone's life instead of living my own.
