Good book for advance developers

This is an interesting book on Hadoop, which explains the installation part along with how to setup load balancer. Further down it deep dives to explain about HDFS, Map reduce program. A very good aspect of this book is that it allows you to know about various analysis tools like Hive, Pig and Hbase, moverover it goes in more details to explain about data analysis using Hive.

Further down are some Import and export tools to onboard data into HDFS.

A good book for someone who has basic knowledge of Hadoop and want to enhance it further by using different tools. This book gives a good start to people with experience in Java and Unix environment.

Some good points of the book are:
- Examples given with very clear explanation.
- The author tried to used practical exercises instead of just basics.
- Tried to cover many tools and deep-dive into some of the key tools

Demerits :
- This book is meant for advance level developers. This is already mentioned in the book to have basic knowledge but I believe it demands more than basic.

Disappointed.

This booklet was put together by a community of writers in Bahrain. It contains two short stories and two poems. Though the stories were interesting reflections by two different writers about their experiences living in Bahrain, they were not very helpful in helping me understand what living in Bahrain is like today. This book is really more like a writers' journal giving amatures a forum to publish their works. I felt I was reading term papers with the title Why I like Bahrain. Nothing wrong with that, but not the kind of information I was looking for. The second story in the book was more of an "I remember when" as the author gave a lot of information about places that used to exist in the 70's and now are hotels, parking lots or the like. Reminded me of the old joke about a lost driver asking a local farmer how to get to their desired destination and he replies with directions such as "turn left after you get to where the old red barn used to be!" Entertaining, but not very helpful.

This is neither a travel guide nor book about Bahrain history and culture. I will try some of the other books available that really are travel guides and books on Bahrain history and culture.

This book is brilliant. A great writing style which makes you want to just keep reading right through to the end. Very cheap as well so well worth reading. Well done to Robin Barratt.

About the Author
Kevin Ryan, Ph.D., Stanford University, is Professor Emeritus of Education at Boston University School of Education. He is also the founding director of the Center for Character and Social Responsibility. A former high school English teacher, Dr. Ryan was a tenured faculty member at the University of Chicago and the Ohio State University before moving to Boston University. In 1970 Ryan was granted an Alfred North Whitehead Fellowship at Harvard University. Since then he received the Boston University Scholar-Teacher Award, the National Award of Distinction by the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, and the Paideia Society's Award for Educational Excellence. Ryan has written and edited 22 books and over 100 articles on teacher and character education. He is also the author of TEACHING FOR STUDENT LEARNING: BECOMING A MASTER TEACHER (with James M. Cooper, �2012, Cengage); THOSE WHO CAN, TEACH, 14th Edition (with James M. Cooper and Cheryl Bolick, �2016, Cengage); and the editor of KALEIDOSCOPE: CONTEMPORARY AND CLASSIC READINGS IN EDUCATION, 13th Edition (with James Cooper, � 2012, Cengage).

James M. Cooper is Professor Emeritus from the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, where he served as Commonwealth Professor of Education (1984-2004) and Dean of the School (1984-1994). As Dean of the Curry School of Education, he led the initiative to restructure the teacher education program, moving to an innovative five-year program that integrates the study of arts and sciences, professional education, and field experiences. He is also series editor of the Educator's Guide series (Cengage). His books and articles address the areas of teacher education, supervision of teachers, case studies in teacher education, and technology and teacher education. Cooper has also received many honors, including a Fulbright-Hays Award for Lecturing in Portugal and recognition as one of the nation's Distinguished Teacher Educators from the Association of Teacher Educators.

Cheryl Mason Bolick, Ph.D. North Carolina State University, is Associate Professor and Director of Research and Professional Development for Outreach at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was previously a faculty member at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. She is an Academic Leadership Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a Sallie Mae National First Year Classroom Teacher after her first year of teaching. Her scholarly contributions primarily address areas of teacher education, social studies, education, and instructional technology. She has authored or co-authored 17 books or book chapters and 41 peer-reviewed journal articles.

Nice Overview, but how do you view the video clips?

I got this for my "Intro into Education" class. This is okay as far as a textbook goes--of course, way too high priced, but that is the way with any required text. I thought the authors did a fine job of outlining all the basics of teaching, and found most of the material (especially the case studies) very interesting and thought provoking. The book touched on many topics, including possible pitfalls, legal rulings and court cases, standards, the history of education, job opportunities, professional development, the role of the teacher, educational philosophies, etc. One feature that especially interested me was the TechSource Video clips. I am interested in seeing how other educators manage their classrooms, employ certain techniques, and help their students to succeed. The book did not say how to view these clips at all (or I missed it if it did). Do I need to purchase an extra key card or something to do this? You would think that for the price it would be included! Anyway, if anyone knows where I need to go or what I need to do to watch these videos, please let me know! Thanks!

An excellent book for prospective teachers. It really opens your eyes to what a teaching career involves. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering teaching. It will quickly help you to see whether it's a career you should actually pursue.

I ordered this because I needed it for one of the classes I was in . This arrived on time and was covered in bubble wrap. There were no bends or rips in it so that was great ! I would say that it is way too expensive but I guess you will have that with any school book you need .

It's a good collector's item

If you're looking for a how to draw book, this isn't the book for you. However, if you're a Don Bluth fan, and an aspiring animator this is a terrific book. This book is full of inspirational anecdotes, stories, and tips, than practical working knowledge. I'd recommend you get that the Preston Blair Animation book if you're looking to learn all that. However, I will say that Bluth goes deeper in to concepts of "timing" and "beats" and the art of story telling than Blair does (actually, Blair lacks the story telling chapters.)

This book also goes a bit in to story-boarding. Which for fans of Dragon's Lair makes this a really neat book, since it contains storyboards from an entire scene of the unmade DRAGON'S LAIR movie. I really wish it would get made someday. :(

All in all, it's a good book, a bit underwhelming (even as a fan, I can understand why it would sell for $5 and under here on Amazon), but a good purchase none the less.

Great Intro to animation

This is not so much a book on drawing as it is an introduction to the process of traditional animation. Written in a conversational style with plenty of illustrations, it contains amusing anecdotes and tidbits of wisdom from master animator and director Don Bluth. The model sheets and sketches have rarely been seen anywhere else, and the drawings as always are pure genius. I would recommend this book for anyone new to animation or Don Bluth Fans.

Motivation for animators

Im a Don Bluth fan since small age, and this book it feels like if he was really talking to you.
As an animator enthusiast, i really find this book inspiring. Its more like a motivation book than a textbook.
It explains really well the basics of animation and it also includes thins like the musical score and voice recording.
I really recommend it if you want to read something that its not just a animation textbook.

There is much to be learned from this slim volume

For those, like me, who first came to Rumi via the free-form paraphrases of Coleman Barks in the late 1990s, when Rumi came in vogue, this selection of Rumi's poetry by early twentieth century Orientalist par excellence Reynold A. Nicholson is decidedly different. That is not to say bad, but it is different.

Nicholson's translations are not un-poetic, but they are fairly literal and quite old-fashioned. This might scare off the casual reader, but if you really dig into the meat of these poems, and the fine scholarly footnotes attached to each selection, many of the poems are intriguing, instructional, and, of course, quite mystical. Now, the paraphrases of Coleman Barks might be mystical, in their modern way, but these poems tend not only to be mystical but theological, and I hope the reader of this review will understand the difference.

Modern mysticism, and this includes Barks, includes twin strains of ecumenicism and a relativistic hedonism, an un-morality. What do I mean? Ecumenicism, a one-source, many wells religious philosophy that seeks to claim all mystics are on a correct path to the Godhead. Although it is clear that Rumi draws from Christianity and Judaism and other sources, he is a strict Mohammedan, and this is made clear in several poems. Rumi's Sufism, his mysticism, might seem a bit un-Muslim, but Rumi makes it clear that it is not; his mysticism is certainly not New Agey. When you consider that Nicholson died in 1945, it is as if he read some modern takes on Rumi when he declares in a footnote: "'Man is born once,' a hard saying for some modern writers who foist upon Rūmī the Indian doctrine of rebirth...." Ha. This brings us to the "hedonism" of modern new age mysticism. Read through Barks, and other such writers, and you might get the idea that besotted, drunken debauchery is the path to a mystic experience, that morality makes no difference. This is not what Rumi is trying to say. He is not saying: get drunk and have sex so you can see God. He is comparing the experiences, the exhilarating feeling when you're drinking, the ineffable euphoria when you fall in love, to mystical One-ness. Those hard to explain soul-emotions, multiplied a thousandfold, are the experiences of the mystic. Still, the modern "mystic" goes for the easy way. Thus the "Qabala" of Madonna and her ilk, who think that "mysticism" gives one a license to sin; or who read a bit of Zen, carry prayer beads, but never worry about morality; or those who sin away, point out when Jesus said, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her..." and forget he then told the woman, "Go, and sin no more" - NOT "Hey keep sinning because everyone does it."

So, back to the book at hand. There is much to be learned from this slim volume. The footnotes alone serve as a primer to Sufism and Islam, and some of Rumi's insights on life and mystical experiences are well-worth the Dover Thrift Editions price.

I've recently discovered this poet. This collection brings together short, quick poems that provide volumes of contemplation!

This inexpensive book contains endless value... so much for so little!

wonderful poetry, terrible layout

I love Rumi and I have read a lot of his works. This book was so cheap, I was suspicious - and I should have been. It's not best translation and the layout is just awful, horrible font, difficult to read, cluttered. It makes it difficult to get lost in his words. I would definitely recommend Rumi to anyone, but not this edition. There are better, clearer, more beautiful versions out there.
