like Salinger did in Catcher in the Rye

This is a different kind of book. The technique is not new; the story is told through first person narratives by its principle characters. But the challenge here is that the focus of the characters is on bodybuilding, which wouldn't seem to be catalyst for intense reflection or insight, if you buy into the stereotype of that kind of athlete, and each character is revealed more through thought than action.

The author has put heart and soul into these characters without making them implausible, like Salinger did in Catcher in the Rye. The sport itself comes off neither winner nor loser. The best aspects of it and the worst are laid side by side.

There is evidence of great writing here. The problem of writing characters who, on the surface, aren't typically known for deep insight is well met. Mr. Nettles has brought substance to these men, good and bad. The shortness of the novella forces a kind of compactness that may not be to the author's best advantage, but conversely the brevity avoids a deep introspection that would be odd. It's up to the reader to decide.

This new book has some compelling aspects, not the least of which being good writing and a strong attempt to show how childhood events subtly and not-so-subtly inform the adults we all become (for better and for worse). There are some superfluous elements (details about grandma, descriptions of the nasty bathroom at the gym) that read a bit like filler and serve to highlight the real weakness here: this is really a long short story, not a novel. The upsetting climax of the story will bother many folks, and I personally found it a little distasteful. But books, unlike Hollywood, aren't always appealing b/c they reflect life.

"Spring was here but couldn't stay. / Spring left on a summer day. / Plants that once were hardly there / now have flowers everywhere." Why are there flowers everywhere? "Plants grow best in summer light, / when days are long and warm and bright." Although the verse is quite ordinary and the approach not overly scientific ("Leaves use sun to make the food. / When there's less sun, leaves come unglued"), young children will come away with a basic understanding of the seasons and how Earth's yearly trip around the Sun affects the weather in both hemispheres. the best kids' science book I've found

I am a physicist with a speciality in education research, and I spent a lot of time looking for good books about science for my two young daughters. This is my absolute favorite. What I love about this book is that it conveys that science is about asking questions, and that there are multiple layers of answers to any question, while keeping it simple enough that kids can understand it. And it doesn't hurt that it breaks stereotypes by having an African American girl as the protagonist. It also has nice rhymes and my kids love it. It is so sad that this book appears to be out of print.

Poetry and Science. Gotta love it. A review of "What Makes the Seasons"

I think this is a nice book for toddlers and preschoolers. It is a nice read-aloud, with a cute rhyme and I think it does a pretty good job answering the questions it raises.

An example of what you will find follows:

The colored leaves dance all around.

But WHY do leaves fall to the ground?

In all the leaves on all the trees

Are tiny tree food factories.

Leaves use sun to make the food.

When there's less sun, leaves com unglued.

Four Stars. [B-]. Artwork is bright and attractive. Nice rhyme makes for a good read-aloud. The book provides a nice introduction to the why and wherefore of the seasons: earth's movement around the sun; rain freezing to make snow, etc.

Colorful drawings and simple rhymes explain the seasons

This book starts on a rainy spring day and follows a young girl as she explores the seasons by examining the natural world around her. Bold, colorful drawings are complimented by the simple, yet effective, rhyming text. The insides of both the front and back cover are decorated with checkerboard patterns alternating small pictures with plain colored blocks. The detail is amazing, and it's fun to identify each picture and explain why it symbolizes a particular season. A beautiful introduction to the seasons for young children.

As a first year high school coach, I purchased several books to help me develop a good program. This books is a must have. It was my favorite. It is all it says and then some. Learning from a Master Composer

I didn't see any reviews yet, so I thought I'd be the 1st. When I got this book, I thought it would be hand written charts and some computer charts and his actual charts, thinking Al DiMeola is probably using computers much of the time and it would be interesting to see and learn his compositional approach. What is here is all neat computer charts that appear to have been edited by someone else. The first tune I checked out was "Turquoise". I was expecting his picked chordal approach to the theme melody, but instead found only the melody which suggests he is simply playing a single note line here, which we know isn't correct from listening to the tunes and seeing the Youtube videos. I thought to myself, "great, some clown has edited this stuff for Al simply to profit from it and it's not going to be very accurate". After spending some time with the other tunes, I realized that they are very well done and very accurate for understanding his compositional approach. I don't know for sure, unless Al himself replies here, but I imagine he may have written "Turquoise" with the rhythmic line and later played it with the chordal approach. Who knows, but it's not too difficult to transcribe his chordal approach if you want to play this as he does.

Many of the other songs have been notated very exact to what he is doing, but what is very useful is that you get a feel for his approach. You see how he thinks and leaves sections open for improvisation, that you may have thought were composed. He is in my opinion one of the better composers out there as he doesn't stick to traditional jazz, but blends in all kinds of ideas and still keeps things fresh with many opportunities to improvize. Additionally, you can really see how strong his rhythmic skills are and this makes it into his compositions making for some difficult sight reading.

Some of these songs he has performed in a variety of ways, so what is notated may be closer to one version than another, but this forces you to learn and understand how he has rearranged songs for different band formats etc..
Highly Recommended for Composers or Al DiMeola fans.

Lots of infos, not so organized

This is not a book you can read, it's a reference tool with infos about the major scholars, schools and commentaries. I expected maybe something more extensive, more pages, quite expensive the price. I agree about the bad organizations, no chapters, no arguments, only alphabetical chinese transliteration that make it messy.

Superb Reference on the Yi

This is one of the 'books I would take to the moon with me'. Unprecedented in the West, this book is an encyclopedia of research on the Book of Changes (the Yi Jing, in old romanization I Ching). For the student working on the Yi in the original Chinese this book is an invaluable asset. It cites books and authors, always giving the original Chinese characters, and explains all the key concepts of Yi Xue over the centuries.
The only fault I find is in the quality of the editing and printing. The book is poorly bound for the price (a glued binding for $75). More importantly, there are no page headings describing individual page content as one would expect in a reference book. It looks to me like the publisher saved money by producing a no-frills edition of a book with a small market. I think that if the work had been titled properly, as "An Encyclopedia of I Ching Studies", it would sell better and justify a better edition.
Speaking of encyclopedias, there is a wonderful three volume work out now in China, the Zhou Yi Quan Shu (ISBN 7801302354). How wonderful if this publisher, which has already produced such key works on Yi Xue as Richard Rutt's splendid translation of the Yi and the current work, were to sponsor a translation of this major encyclopedia of the Yi Jing and Jiao Shi Yi Lin.

How to take deadly aim with a presentation - and win!

If it comes back into print - buy this book! Moving Mountains was written long before Microsoft Powerpoint and similar presentation programs became popular, so it focuses on style, content, and knowing your audience. Tips include how to present a pre-draft of an external presentation to your management (don't have totally polished copy - leave room for them to make their mark), and how to salvage a hopeless presentation the night before (re-write the text so it focuses primarily on "you"). This book is worth a wait. See if it comes back into print - or (gasp) head for your local library. Very highly recommended

Best book ever on presentations

Seek this book. I've read books on presentations for 40 years and teach public speaking across America. This is the most insightful book, in fact the very best book I've ever read, period. The psychological savvy into groups, the chapter on graphics and visuals, the hundreds of little tips and techniques is unmatched. His emphasis on meeting the audience's needs is brilliant. I've been using Boettinger's ideas for more than 20 years they've helped me earn more than a million dollars and still no author has matched his fluent style, novel-like descriptions, and breath of knowledge.
