Perfect book for learning MicroStrategy BI on a Kindle

The author leads the reader through a series of bona-fide workshops that will give you a strong understanding of the sophisticated and robust data warehouse/business intelligence environment of MicroStrategy. If you have already used MicroStrategy tools, the labs can fill out your knowledge set. Either way, the Kindle and this book together are the perfect application for investing your time in the labs - and you SHOULD go through all the labs - because you not only can read through the directions on the Kindle, you can EASILY navigate to the URI links provided in the book without losing your train of thought in your extant lab. Either way: go through the book, and the author will have opened a door of BI knowledge that is difficult to penetrate: the MicroStrategy BI environment.

Dean Movshovitz graduated from Tel Aviv University's Film and Television Department, majoring in Screenwriting. After his studies he served as Director of Film and Media at Israel's Office for Cultural Affairs in North America, at the Consulate General of Israel in New York. He won his first screenwriting award in Israel at sixteen, for a short comedy script. Dean wrote about cinema for Taste of Cinema and the Tel Aviv Cinematheque Magazine and has lectured widely about Israeli cinema during his tenure at the consulate. He has moderated filmmaker Q & A panels at Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, Film Forum, Jacob Burns Film Center and many more organizations. His previous collaboration with Bloop Animation has been covered by The A.V. Club, Daily Dot and other sources.

These "rules" aren't new. NOT from Pixar, or anyone who'd worked with them. Not proofread. Disappointing.

I bought this book in print. Seeing the high price -- and the five-star reviews, despite it -- I expected some great, unique insights from someone who'd worked with Pixar, and perhaps some wonderful color illustrations from Pixar films, highlighting how they craft their stories.

When the book arrived yesterday, I saw that neither were true.

1) The book reads like a good, undergraduate thesis. It highlights several classic storytelling (and screenwriting) tropes and plot construction methods, with lengthy, scene-by-scene examples from almost every Pixar hit film, ever.

2) The printed book was published in color, which required a higher-than-average selling price. However, the only only interior illustration is a color photo of the author, plus blue text for the chapter numbers.

Another reviewer has mentioned the fact that this is good information, but amateurishly presented.

I agree. These "rules" are solid, familiar points I've read over & over again in excellent books by Jeffrey Alan Schechter, Blake Snyder, Shawn Coyne, Larry Brooks, and others.

And, as a Pixar and Disney fan, I'm kind of appalled that the book's title and thumbnail cover image (with the Pixar-ish desk lamp) suggest that the author has some connection with Pixar. It's why I bought this book.

He doesn't.

Sadly, the presentation issues don't end with the misleading title, subtitle, and cover design.

When I opened the book, instead of a title page, I saw a full page headed COPYRIGHTS. Yes, with an S. And then the standard copyright blurb. It's a little difficult to get past such an obvious typo in letters a half-inch tall.

The second page...? A disclaimer that concludes: "The author and publisher are not affiliate [sic] with Pixar or Walt Disney Animation Studios." Another glaring typo, and no mention that Pixar and related names are trademarked. (That's odd, for someone who makes his own copyright such a high priority.)

I never found a title page.

However, despite the book's amateurish first impression, I was STILL hoping to read some wonderful insights about storytelling.

Some of the information in the book is okay. Mostly, it's a fan's opinions of how Pixar tells engaging stories.

He makes some good points. Far more are confusing, at best. Due to grammar and punctuation problems, I frequently had to stop and re-read sentences, sometimes several times, to understand what the author intended to say.

A bigger problem: the author seems to assume we're familiar with every Pixar film. I've seen most, but not all of them.

So, when the author talks about "the scene where....," in a movie I haven't seen, I'm clueless. Whatever point he was making is diluted. In some cases (even if I've seen the film multiple times), his points entirely elude me.

When the author came up with this book concept, it was probably seemed like a good idea. If he rewrites this, possibly from the ground up, it might work. I'm not sure.

As I see it, these are the book's main problems:

- The cover and title need to make it clear this is NOT a Pixar book. The author ISN'T sharing an insider's views from Pixar's story creation process.
- This book's basic content -- the "rules" -- aren't new. Others, especially Schechter and Snyder, have explained them more effectively.
- The author seems to assume we'll "get it" if he simply references Pixar scenes. That may work well in conversations he's had, but in many cases, even when I'd seen the related film many times, I still wasn't sure of this author's points.
- This book needs proofreading to correct confusing grammar and punctuation. It probably needs thorough editing, too.
- Improved formatting could provide a better first impression and improve the reading experience. Justified margins are just one improvement I'd suggest.
- This book's price is far too high. Had the author been willing to leave out the full-color photo of himself, a b&w interior would have allowed him to price this book more appropriately.

"Pixar Storytelling" isn't entirely awful, but it's NOT a five-star book. The best I can give it is two stars, and that may be too high.

If you have not read Robert Mckee's "Story"...
and you weren't sure about reading Blake Snyder's "Save the Cat" trilogy...

Very good and thorough work

I have always been fascinated and intrigued by Pixar. I find myself elated and eager whenever there's a new Pixar release. Although Pixar has done incredible, groundbreaking animation, it's their stories that have catapulted their movies to a whole separate class head and shoulders above the rest.

This book, Pixar Storytelling, has done a remarkable thing. Mr. Movshovitz has thoughtfully analyzed Pixar films then shared his insights about what makes Pixar's stories so compelling. This book is a quick and interesting read, yet thorough. Mr. M clarifies and supports his points with material from various Pixar films. He is a logical and clear thinker, so his book is orderly and has a good flow.

I confess that I skipped over some parts because I have yet to see the film(s) discussed. But all in all I found it to be an extremely well-written, instructive book from which animators and writers could benefit.

About the Author

Robert Bruce Thompson is a coauthor of Building the Perfect PC, Astronomy Hacks, and the Illustrated Guide to Astronomical Wonders. Thompson built his first computer in 1976 from discrete chips. It had 256 bytes of memory, used toggle switches and LEDs for I/O, ran at less than 1MHz, and had no operating system. Since then, he has bought, built, upgraded, and repaired hundreds of PCs for himself, employers, customers, friends, and clients. Thompson reads mysteries and nonfiction for relaxation, but only on cloudy nights. He spends most clear, moonless nights outdoors with his 10-inch Dobsonian reflector telescope, hunting down faint fuzzies, and is currently designing a larger truss-tube Dobsonian (computerized, of course) that he plans to build.

Solid chemistry in a down-to-earth approach to learning...

Thompson covers serious stuff, complete with best practices, methodologies for recording your experiments, and plenty of safety tips along the way. I *did* say it was far more than just changing the colors of liquids in a test tube...

You can tell that Thompson has a real love of this field. He starts off with his story of how he got interested in chemistry, as well as how this book would map to a first or second year chemistry course. He explains the value of keeping a laboratory notebook in a way that will meticulously track your results and offer a chain of evidence should you stumble upon the next great compound. Safety and supplies follow that, and he does an excellent job in balancing risk and reward, cost and budget. Instead of just saying that you should avoid anything that can possibly injure you, he advises you on how to protect yourself, how to safely handle chemicals that could react in a dangerous fashion, and generally do what you need to do without fearing every little step. After the supplies, you get a course in the chemicals you'll need to obtain to do many of these experiments. Some are fairly easy to get, while others have become more controlled and restricted over the years. Still, he points you to sources and alternatives that will keep this from becoming an overly expensive habit. After a final chapter on laboratory skills, you start getting into the good stuff... mixing chemicals to observe reactions!

The lab exercises are laid out in a straight-forward, easy to follow fashion. Your prep work is covered, along with the supplies and chemicals you need. The procedures follow, along with pictures to show appropriate information. Finally, there are areas to record your observations, answer questions, and try variations on the exercises. All in all, a complete package to learn the particular subject matter being covered. While some of the lab exercises might seem somewhat esoteric in terms of what you're learning, others are extremely practical (like the entire chapter on forensic chemistry). But in all cases, Thompson is laying the groundwork for a complete and solid understanding of chemistry, while having some fun along the way.

Obviously by reading the table of contents, you're not going to give this book to your eight year old and turn them loose in your garage. However, a teenager with solid leanings to chemistry will get a lot of value from this book. Likewise, the adult who somehow lost his or her way to the lab in the course of growing up can rediscover their passion. Teachers can get some new ideas and freshen up their classes... All in all, a great book that brings life to a subject that far too many students and adults fear and dread...

Just one word of advice... packing this book as reading material on a plane may *not* be the best idea... it'd be easy for someone to get the wrong idea as to what you're up to... :)

This book is dangerous

This book is dangerous. It will cause kids to start thinking. There is a definate risk that they will starting wanting to learn about the world around them instead of just studing the answers to a test. I am old enough I remember chemistry sets under the christmas tree and a high school chemistry class were students actually did experiements instead of just watching. DO you, or your childern, want to actually learn chemistry? Then get this book.

Not just "home" chemistry but THE chemistry of the future

This is a dream come true -- a home chemistry book that is not just a bagatelle, but a full-sized lab manual and reference book (412+ pages). It's a serious book. Sadly, it will also be an historical publication, I predict, the cornerstone of all real chemistry of the future. Why? Because of the Culture of Fear: fear of chemicals, fear of glass, fear of litigation, fear of terrorism, fear of druggies (see Thompson's note about iodine on page 65). Already that culture has resulted in the death of the chemistry set, as noted in his Preface. In the near future, that same culture will result in the death of the chemistry class, too, which can easily be "replaced" by computer simulations and labs equipped with timid fake nonsense. (As much as I admire many applets that simulate reactions, as miniature works of art, I also find them disturbing as harbingers of the chemistry pseudo-lab of the future.) As that transformation continues, the day will come when KMnO4 has been replaced on the lab bench by a lookalike that pretends to do a few limited KMnO4-esque tricks and can optionally be sipped as imitation grape juice. At that point, home chemistry will be the ONLY chemistry, the only game in town. Then millions will thank Robert Thompson for having shown them a way back to the real thing.

A new favorite author

Fitzgerald is an author I'd neglected in the past. I'm not sure why because now I'm finding his style really enjoyable. In Babylon Revisited I got a mini-fix of Fitzgerald. Anyone who likes his writing or wants to try it out should get this.
