The development of Soviet realist painting over fifty years through a selection of works from Russia’s leading museums. Socialist realism remains an exceptional phenomenon in twentieth-century art. By affirming the value of content over form and restoring the central role of traditional practices, socialist realism was the declared opponent of the modern movement. In fact, it represented the only completely alternative artistic system. Created by the great Russian artists (Deineka, Malevich, Adlivankin, Laktionov, Plastov, Brodsky, Korzhev), the works present multiple themes and approaches to art, spanning from the last phases of the civil war to the beginnings of the Brezhnev era, stopping at the early 1970s when trends in Soviet art took on varied and inconsistent directions, causing the socialist-realist trend to fade. A non-monolithic view emerges, in which the movement does not originate exclusively as the product of totalitarian control and political pressures but as an evolving organism that reflected internal issues and echoed the great historic events of the twentieth century.

Stunning overview of Soviet Art

This beautiful edition includes many paintings from the Soviet Era, including paintings from the 1920's, paintings from high Stalinism (mid-late 1930's), and paintings from the post-Stalin era. A lot of this art existed in a parallel universe, as art in the West trended more towards modernism and abstraction. Socialist realism, however, needs its day in the sun. Many of the paintings are incredibly powerful, and the essays in this edition are strikingly informative and touch many aspects of the art being presented. This edition presents large pictures of the paintings themselves, as well as an entire compilation of well-written scholarly essays touching different aspects of the style. I highly recommend this recent addition to a growing field of study.
When I was a student in Moscow, I vividly remember seeing many of the paintings here at the Noviy Tretyakov Gallery on the embankment of the Moscow River. Much of the art on display was of course politically-charged, but also shown were many quiet scenes, transformed through acute sensitivity and attention to detail. I remember one painting in particular, featured in this edition. It is Stalin reading Pravda, a red dog (almost fox-like) curled beneath his boots. The background, including the dog, is a bold red. Everything in the painting is circular. Stalin, of course is at the center, and the chair and dog seem to concentrically flow outward from this visual center. Stalin himself is in a crisp, white, and unadorned garment, and he is shown reading "Pravda". This cult of the written word, so well explicated in Katerina Clark's recently-published "Moscow: the Fourth Rome" here sees a parallel in the visual arts. Stalin was often shown reading or writing, and the Soviets saw the written word as something quite powerful and almost sacred. Although totalitarianism of any kind is a nightmare, it is interesting in this aspect to see a totally different parallel in Nazi Germany, where books were burned in an orgy of censorship in the early 1930's.
